Columbus Ohio AP reports a record 102 school tax issues on December ballots with 97 seeking higher taxes, three renewals, and two bond issues. Over 16 000 students were sent home from 10 districts facing funding shortfalls. Stayner Brighton OFA urges action as districts struggle to fund 1970 education.
A three car collision in Henderson injures five people, with responders detailing the crash scene and victims treated on site. Emergency services investigate cause as traffic delays form nearby roads.
President Nixon will hold his eighth news conference from Camp David returning to Washington. Questions likely cover My Lai, Haynsworth defeat, SALT talks, inflation, Vietnam developments, and potential troop withdrawals.
Two influential Democrats Sen John Stennis and former Vice President Hubert Humphrey urged President Nixon to appoint an independent fact finding panel to investigate the My Lai massacre. American air cavalrymen and airmen clashed with North Vietnamese forces over a 100 mile stretch near Saigon, killing 170 on the Vietnamese side while U S casualties stayed low at three dead and 18 wounded. B52 bombers delivered heavy strikes along the border area.
Gov. James A. Rhodes agreed to a two session format proposed by Avco Broadcasting with no audience questions, a moderator, and topic selection by speakers. Taft Jr. has not answered. approach to be aired in Columbus Dayton and Cincinnati. Rhodes favored a pure, informative debate while Taft accepted the format.
