A. J. Gould of New England village and leader in Canaan township war work is confined to his home with a serious flu. His friends fear for recovery while praising his past efforts in band leadership and community service during wartime.
Mr. Jonas Gheer of 34 South High Street receives a War Department telegram declaring his son Marion Gheer, 332nd Infantry Company F, missing in action between October 1 and 12. Marion enlisted in Columbus and has been overseas since last June. the father had no contact since departure for France.
Premier Lloyd George announced the British are crossing the Rhine in a Cologne advance. A Central News dispatch says British forces entered Cologne yesterday, with Cologne at the Rhine bridgehead area under armistice terms.
On the George Washington news dispatches report the United States seeks an international seas rule at the peace conference a minimum contraband list and a definite blockade. President Wilson may address England with possible Oxford honor and a speech outlining freedom of the seas while Churchill signals Britain will not shrink its navy. The ship lies 750 miles east of Washington weather warms and the president’s cold improves as Paris arrivals are planned after December 14.
Martin L. Davey of the Fourteenth Ohio district was sworn in as a member of the House. He defeated ex-Senator Charles Dick, a veteran Republican whose service included thirteen years in the house and senate.
Dec 7 Chicago National League Club president Charles Weghman resigns due to other business pressures. Fred Mitchell, Cubs manager, will be announced as the new club president by William Wrigley Jr., the chief stockholder, in Chicago.
The twelfth annual conference of the National Tax Association scheduled for December 16 and 20 in St. Louis has been postponed due to the influenza epidemic in Missouri. The notice was announced from New York.
Documents in Stockholm allegedly reveal a plan for a worldwide revolution centered in the city. The report notes secrecy and anticipated spread to other nations as authorities investigate the affair.
London December 7 The Daily News reports Premier Lloyd George will declare in Leeds that Great Britain will demand 8,000,000,000 pounds in demnity from Germany and that France will seek even more.
The Ohio Banker prints a feature on Charles G. O Bleness cashier of Security Savings Bank of this city. He sought a military commission and discussed energy transformation as his views were published with a portrait in the December issue.
Columbus health officer Dr. Kahn cites the last week’s influenza rise in Ohio as largely caused by family Thanksgiving gatherings.
Washington reports rapid discharge progress as 1st 2nd 8th 4th 5th 7th 28th 32nd 38th 42nd Rainbow 79th 89th 90th divisions depart to convoy home. About 7 658 officers and 200 000 men have been discharged with more in process and possible legal adjustments to extend service for supplies and overseas needs.
Copenhagen December 7 Germany declares Denmark faces famine with need to sharply cut rations through February when cereals run out Austria warns it lacks food for a month Vienna reports coal shortages and plans to halt rail traffic close schools and shops.
Dispatches report the Ukrainian National Union has seized Kiev after a fierce clash that left about 10 000 dead or wounded. General Skoropadski, hetman of Ukraine, is listed among the dead along with 500 Russian officers. The Union reportedly now controls all of Ukraine.
United Press report from December 7 states Kurt Eisner head of the Bavarian government will publish war office documents with marginal notes in the former Kaiser’s handwriting to convict Wilhelm of starting the war. Berlin dispatches note elections and massed forces at the Chancellery, while the union of workmen and soldiers soviets faces arrest.
Reports from Copenhagen say several people were killed in street battles in Mayence today. Many shops were robbed as Mayence, a key Rhine city, is slated to form the French bridgehead. The Berlin Anzeiger also notes Holland has no right to extradite the former Kaiser.
The Berlin National Tidende states that an entente committee has arrived at Wilhelmshaven on British warships.
Paris reports peace moves lead to release of several American soldiers held in Switzerland. Among them are Lt James Fuller Thomas of Washington D C and Lt Virgil Brookheart of Hyaconda Missouri. They strayed in fog near Fahy on the French frontier, attempted escape, but Swiss guards fired their engine while Thomas tried to start flight. He descended unharmed.
Nine hundred fifty six victims of the anti Jewish outbreak in Lemberg Galicia have been buried, with many bodies still in ruins of burned dwellings as per Nowy Dziennik of Krakow quoted by the Jewish press bureau.
Captain Lewis Nulton commands the battleship Pennsylvania leading a convoy of five fast destroyers as the George Washington carries President Wilson and his party to the peace conference. The Pennsylvania sails with the liner and the escort ships ensuring safe passage.
Columbus December 7. Incorporation papers for the Pershing Republican League may be filed with the Secretary of State and Attorney General McGhee. The group led by former Senator Charles Dick and fourteen Akron residents seeks to elect Pershing president. McGhee rules that forming a political corporation is not forbidden by law.
Berne December 7 President Wilson is invited by Cologne to meet delegations from Berlin and other German cities to discuss Germanys integrity. German papers show universal dread of separatist movements. Berlin seeks to form a combined allied and German army to march on Bolsheviks in Russia. Crown Prince Frederick William abdicated at Wellringen Holland on December 1 per Wolff Bureau.
Senator La Follette of Wisconsin introduced a bill to protect discussion of U S government policy and any proposed laws or war or peace terms. The measure, referred to the judiciary committee, aims to ensure freedom to debate public matters.
Ber lin correspondent for The Daily Express reports Germany is constructing an airplane for an Atlantic crossing and a Zeppelin with the same aim. The information came from a guided tour of Staaken aircraft works led by managing director Raasch, a former naval officer.
The Prussian government formally revokes the long standing privilege of immunity from law enjoyed by members of the Hohenzollern family. This action ends their legal exemption and subjects them to the same legal process as ordinary citizens.
One hundred thousand cotton spinners in Lancashire are ordered to strike after employers reject a 40 percent wage increase. The action follows the terse wage dispute and signals a major stoppage across the textile region.
Mabel Atkinson sues Clim ton Atkinson for alimony after a troubled marriage begun October 16 1898. They have three children Vera 19 Ernest and a 14 year old girl. She claims abuse separation refusal to support, labor on farm and elsewhere, he accuses her of faults, he owns 60 acres valued $1 000 a house and lot in Athens worth $1 000 and $100 in personal property. She seeks temporary support costs and alimony at final hearing.
Three Ohio Company mines on Sugar Creek paused operations after wage leaders proposed hikes to match other state employers. Mediator Geo F Miles and Pritchard of the operators discussed terms, with a decision to refer the case to A.E. Jones of Toledo next week for action.
Superintendent Morgan will take Athens high school boys for a weeks trip to New York City during Christmas vacation. The group will spend several days in the capital and four or five days in New York. Mayor Hyland of New York will meet the boys at City Hall, and Boy Scouts of America chief executive James West will be entertained. Travelers include William Moler, Foraker, Floyd Brown, Seth James Basom, Floyd Welfe, Glenn S Neart, Clarence Clifford and Liggett.
Night officer Bolin and railroad cer Goldsberry on Thursday picked up three men at the Union pot: Stan Calvert of Guysville Jones of Luhrig and John Carmi of Canaanville on drunk charges. They appeared before Mayor Woodworth Friday and drew fines of 85 dollars, settling for about six apiece.
Pearl Smith and Albert Perry, two youths from Strouds Run, had a rare encounter while rabbit hunting. A rabbit they shot earlier in a patch drew their fire when a big black snake crawled from the briars, mid-summer with no freeze recently.
In Wilmington North Carolina on December 7 three people were killed with several injured when Atlantic Coast Line train No 89 derailed at El Rod after a switch split. Emergency crews worked at the wreck site as investigators examined the cause.
