Columbus Ohio AP Governor Thomas J. Herbert praised the swift action of the Republican led legislature in approving his special session program with only minor changes. The display of efficiency came as a contrast to prior delays in the session.
State lawmakers approved a two day session passing 12 appropriations totaling $29,676,087 for veterans benefits welfare and state worker raises. The session also moved to allow 60 percent votes for special levies next year and rejected lowering the license tag to seven dollars. The Ohio School of Social Science in Cleveland, linked to the Communist Party, was denied subversive status by Senator Howard Metzenbaum, who argued it offered legitimate education.
