A striking Mediterranean event reports six axis ships sunk amid wartime action. In Ohio a bitter cold wave drops temperatures to zero with 18 deaths linked to a blast from yesterday. The Columbus Weather Bureau forecasts some relief today and tonight as winds ease.
The 250 foot Cleveco, with 19 crew aboard, drifted after breaking from the Admiral which sank with 14 dead. Cold, 18 foot waves, engines flooded, as Ossipee stood by. Weather battered Ohio cities, fires burned, and highway crews kept winter roads passable amid a major cold snap.
A winter fire engulfed a six room frame house in Brookfield Township fourteen miles east of Warren. Marylin Uber ten, William Uber sixteen, and their uncle Benjamin Uber forty six perished as the blaze swept through the structure.
Allied air forces supporting ground troops near Buna and Gona repelled a Japanese attempt to reinforce via destroyers. In a 12 hour clash 23 Japanese fighters were shot down while destroyers withdrew. Australian troops seized a Japanese command post near Gona, killing 34 and capturing 40 Bren guns.
Chicago faced a severe meat shortage with hundreds of butcher shops shut down. George Dressler, president of the Retail Meat Dealers Association of Chicago, said 500 of the city's 5,000 licensed butchers left the business since January, warning the situation is deteriorating toward a fatal stage for dealers.
Cincinnati fire authorities warn of the frightful potential danger from gasoline fumes after rationing and reports that hoarded fuel was dumped into sewers. Officials caution against pouring gasoline into lavatories basements or street drains as fumes could travel through connected structures and ignite furnaces or water heaters.
Steubenville Deep Shaft Coal Co. workers return after a 12 day strike as the company signs a closed shop contract with the United Mine Workers.
In Washington the House Ways and Means Committee opened public hearings on a bill to suspend wartime tariff rules. Rep Robertson said passage would not bring duty free imports. Rep Jenkins warned of vast presidential power over immigration and urged continued hearings to hear views from dairy and cattle sectors nationwide.
Secretary Wickard said no intent to fasten government controls on the food industry. He urged readiness to act as wartime needs rise and noted 25 percent of 1943 output would go to military and lend-lease needs. He praised farmers for 1942 production and warned against overconfidence.
New York, Paul V. McNutt, head of the wartime manpower commission, told a National Association of Manufacturers meeting that poor industry mobilization risks compulsory measures on a large scale. He cited 6,000,000 in uniform, rising to 9,700,000 by year end 1943, and limited replacements from 112 million unemployed. He noted voluntary enlistment cessation could aid industry but affect military efficiency and morale.
Congressional pressure mounts to curb power of the Office of Price Administration and other emergency bureaus. Democratic members from the South push to reduce Leon Henderson authority as Republicans consider joining in early next Congress.
Columbus officials say the state will retain a fixed 12 million dollar allocation to local governments from sales tax, ensuring revenue even if overall sales tax receipts drop. Tax Commissioner William S. Evatt told auditors at the association’s 75th convention the administration aims to keep faith with local governments despite possible state shortfalls.
Army fliers scan the Gulf Coast and waters for Boyd D. Wagner the first American WWII ace missing four days after a routine flight. Wagner is credited with destroying between 30 and 50 enemy planes in air and ground combat.
E. F. Kruse of the Ohio Agriculture War Board told farm machinery rationing board chairmen they could start rationing equipment now held by dealers. Farm machinery stocks will stay frozen by county and quotas are established.
Rep. Melvin J. Maas charges there is no real unity of political or military command among the United Nations and calls Allies to publish postwar plans. He says victory in Europe depends on Mediterranean control and criticizes fighting only to protect or create empires.

Superintendents of three Ohio mental institutions Columbus Dayton and Cleveland have approved 37 conscientious objectors for proposed employment in their hospitals at a wage of 2.50 per month. The State Welfare Department said selective service will assign these workers immediately to institutional jobs.
Two Ohioans receive Army honors for bravery in the Dutch Harbor bombing. Tech Sergeant Paul H. Herron of McConnelsville loaded casualties and ferried them under fire to a hospital earning the Silver Star. Private Arthur M. Morgan of Morgan County, listed as deceased, is noted for the Purple Heart.
The AFL CIO agree on practical cooperation will be tested in the Kaiser ship yards dispute. Arbitration of unresolved jurisdictional differences is to occur while unity talks continue. Roosevelt intervened to avert a major clash. The NLRB had ordered a hearing at Portland on December 14 prompted by the CIO Marine and shipbuilders union over closed shop contracts with Kaiser yards.
Fred A. Baughan, general manager of the retail food dealers of California, warned the joint committee on reduction of non essential federal expenditures that grocery stores would fail without relief from price restrictions and the government might need to feed people via food dispensing stations. He called it a move toward technocracy and state socialism.
The Treasury reported that the gross public debt reached 100.38 billion dollars as of November 30, climbing by 446.7 million from the prior day. This marks the first time the debt has exceeded 100 billion.
Allied reports say Britain's Mediterranean fleet supports the Tunisian advance while the British admiralty notes the destruction of four enemy merchant ships and two destroyers en route to North Africa. The US Navy reports five transports lost during the North Africa operation and only small casualties overall.

Kansas City report says a crude oil shortage exists in the United States but figures are secret. Chairman Truman's wartime investigating committee heard testimony that storage declined by over 35 million barrels in the past year east of the Rockies due to transportation limits.
The War Production Board awarded salvage pennants to 52 Ohio counties for collecting 100 pounds or more of metal per person in the scrap drive. The 20 by 40 inch pennants bearing the WPB emblem will be distributed in counties including Cuyahoga Richland Hamilton Athens and Morgan when they arrive from Washington.
The Office of Price Administration authorized extra gasoline for Ohio farmers in December amid threats to halt marketing dairy products. Local rationing boards may issue supplementary coupons to those whose allocations from the Office of Defense Transportation are deemed inadequate to meet needs.
