A bitter clash over the miners welfare and pension fund erupts as trustees meet to break a spending deadlock. John L. Lewis seeks swift fund access for hospitalized miners while seating Charles Dawson on the three man board amid operator opposition.
The Atlantic alliance approved a broad defense plan and a U S arms program worth about one billion dollars to bolster Western Europe. The plan envisions strategic bombing, coordinated naval activity to keep sea lanes open, and land actions after initial resistance, with France and other continental members likely bearing the brunt.
The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway will abandon four passenger train runs in Southern Ohio around January 1. The state utilities commission authorized the action, saying the trains lose money. Nos. 30 and 37 run Columbus to Athens, Nos. 130 and 137 run Athens to Pomeroy. hearing showed little public inconvenience from removal.

A tall 14-year-old, George Crispt, faces a police court hearing Monday on arson charges after a fire killed two children. He is held without bond and also faces eight other charges. The blaze broke out November 15 in a three story building housing apartments and a store.

Prestonburg Ky former Rep Andrew J May says he is innocent after a federal judge in Washington ordered him to serve eight to 24 months for wartime bribery and conspiracy. May spoke at his home to reporters saying the truth of guilt lies in a man's heart. Norman Allen of the Floyd County Times observed May appeared tired but alert and strong.
Jerome Oates 28 pleaded innocent to first degree murder in the Saturday night slaying of George Davis owner of the A. A. Social Club. Police say Davis accused of improper advances to Oates wife. Judge Robert B. Nevin set December 9 for the hearing.
The Matson freighter Hawaiian Rancher rolled over at Encinal Terminal Alameda as fire raged in its hold. Fireboats pumped water to smother the blaze after the fire department earlier said the fire was under control but stubborn with no immediate casualty report.
Twenty two Barberton firefighters were hospitalized after battling a blaze that sent fumes suspected to be a deadly gas into the air. Fire Chief Culbertson said some fell on scene and others were treated with oxygen. officials questioned if phosgene caused delayed harm. The fire damaged the projection booth at the Fairbanks Wheater and a jewelry store, with about 100000 total damage and 34 man department aided by nearby volunteers.
Ohio Tax Commissioner C Emory Glander said a state income tax may be needed if more cities adopt local income taxes. He spoke at an American Municipal Association session with about 200 city officials, noting a state tax would not deprive cities entirely since half of revenues would be returned to the originating cities. Six Ohio cities already have local income taxes: Youngstown Toledo Columbus Dayton Springfield and Warren.
Two Jackson Ohio men Delbert Roush and Daniel Jenkins were fined 15 dollars each plus costs for hauling Christmas trees without a bill of sale in Columbus. Judge Moats suspended 10 dollars of each fine when ownership was proven. The arrests followed a patrol stop Monday under a new law targeting hauling more than five trees or 100 pounds of boughs.
IRONTON magistrate I N Crabtree fined six men found guilty of exhibiting slot machines in the Chesapeake area. Merrill Moore Paul Young Clifford Edwards and Lewis Griffith each received 200 fines and nine days in jail with half the fines and jail terms suspended. Berkley Moore and Feart Grubb were fined 50 with 30 day jail terms suspended. Newark reports five slot machines seized when state liquor agents raided American Legion Post No 85.
Frank Marek, 79, a poultry dealer, was found smothered with a blanket wrapped over his head in his Cleveland residence. Police say the death is murder suspicion. a large money safe had been opened but the stolen amount is not yet determined.
Temperatures will average below normal with a normal high of 36 and low of 21. Snow flurries are expected Sunday through Wednesday with about a quarter inch of precipitation.

George F. Blosser is appointed deputy collector of internal revenue in the Athens zone office by Herbert J. Kelly. A 43 month war veteran, Blosser served 3 years with the Seventh Air Force finance department in the Pacific. He is married, lives in Logan, and this is his first civil service post. New office employees will attend income tax school in Columbus December 5 to 14, with veteran staff attending the final three days.
An early morning blaze tore through a four story hotel in Sapulpa Oklahoma and spread to nearby buildings causing about 1 million dollars in damage. No deaths reported though a few guests may have been trapped on upper floors. Fifty three guests were registered. The flames destroyed a quarter block of buildings.
Lancaster Fairfield County Republican executive committee endorsed State Treasurer Don Ebright for the GOP gubernatorial nomination. Don Turnbull, committee chairman, announced the endorsement Thursday night.

He will back a strong labor coalition and claims he can propose a more equitable labor relations plan than Taft Hartley if he runs.
Mrs Aaron Kelton suffered second degree burns on her back after her housecoat caught fire from a reflector heater in the kitchen. She rolled into a heavy carpet to extinguish the flames while preparing breakfast for her two children. A local physician treated her at home.

Wilmington judge ordered Martin Snell, 16, sent to Lima State Hospital for examination after pleading guilty to assault with intent to commit a crime against a 13 year old Blanchester girl last Sept 30. He is charged with killing Blanchester policeman Burdette Lee and, if found sane, to be arraigned here.
New York The Electric Company seeks a fresh union election for its 125000 production workers after ousting the United Electrical Workers from CIO leadership. GE asked the National Labor Relations Board to decide which union represents employees.
