President Johnson and Democratic leaders press for a quick settlement as negotiations resume with AFL-CIO United Steelworkers and 10 major firms. Labor seeks a 17.9 cent hourly raise amid wage guideline limits. industry cites 3.2 percent cap.
At Cape Kennedy astronauts Cooper and Conrad meet with doctors after eight day spaceflight recovery. Cooper regains six pounds and Conrad four of eighty one lost, with tests ongoing. Titan 2 booster and Agena-linked mission prep continue as Schirra and Stafford ready for Gemini 6.
Premier Nguyen Cao Ky defends South Viet Nam draft law for men under 37 and warns against student opposition. He warns the government will not bow to what he calls senseless protests while pledging care for welfare and urges proof of complaints. Ky says offensives will start after the month ends with more volunteers easing mobilization.
Strategic Air Command B52 bombers based in Guam struck two Viet Cong concentrations in South Vietnam in night raids the 15th and 16th such attacks. One target was Quang Tin Province 320 miles northeast of Saigon and the other Zone D near Bien Hoa Province. Separately a government unit clashed with Viet Cong 175 miles northeast of Saigon killing ten and capturing two. An outpost near An Hoa was overrun and burned. a helicopter post northeast of Saigon was retaken. An American and two Vietnamese died in a Tan An helicopter crash. Navy planes from the carrier Independence flew four bombing missions against North Vietnam.
The Ohio Department of Development reports the January first population of 10,501,234, up 794,837 since 1960. Columbus grows to 521,628, a 10.7 percent rise, while Cleveland slips 0.2 percent to 858,823 and Cincinnati drops 0.7 percent to 498,847.
LA report says Ronald Reagan was offered help for his governor campaign by John Birch Society national public relations director Mrs. Alexander alleged the offer. Reagan dismissed details though acknowledged Rousselot plans to back Republican candidates where possible.
President Johnson signs a bill making killing kidnapping or attacking a president vice president or acting president a federal offense. The measure follows the Kennedy assassination commission's recommendation and places FBI jurisdiction above local and state authorities during related investigations.
In Geneva the Soviet Union rejected the American bid for a nuclear weapons nonproliferation treaty. Soviet Delegate Semyon K Tsarapkin said no treaty is possible without barring West Germany from any nuclear access and warned Western powers push for such arms while aiding West German militarists.
United Steelworkers president I W Abel leads a six member union team with R Conrad Cooper of U S Steel Corp heading a four man industry group representing 10 companies. Federal officials including William E Simkin are expected to attend as a deadline of 12 01 am Sept 9 nears for a new contract and potential shutdown affecting about 80 percent of the steel industry with wage proposals ranging from 11.5 to 17.9 cents per hour and white house wage price guidelines capping increases around 14 cents per hour.
Scranton endorses Ray Bliss’ campaign to lure splinter groups back into the Republican fold as part of a broader effort to consolidate party unity. The report notes Bliss’ political strategy and regional backing shaping the national party landscape.
The United States will continue periodic talks with Red China via ambassadors in Warsaw despite a change in the American envoy there. President Johnson has designated Postmaster General John A Gronouski to replace Ambassador John Moors Cabot in Warsaw. The schedule for talks remains unaffected according to State Department press officers.
In Saas Fee Switzerland the Allalin Glacier broke away burying the Mattmark power project site. About 1000 workers were on site when the avalanche struck, with 96 feared dead and more than 20 injured, as rescue efforts continued amid renewed icefall threats.
A US Marine investigation found no indication of sabotage in the August 24 crash of a four engine C130 Hercules at Kaitak Airport Hong Kong that killed 59 American servicemen. The preliminary report also ruled out operational error as responsible. Investigators did not state the cause of the aircraft twisting off course and plunging into Hong Kong Bay.

Cecil Paul McLead 64 of 59 Hudson Ave died at 1 20 p m in Sheltering Arms Hospital from injuries after a State Highway Department dump truck toppled off the road and pinned him for about 30 minutes. He died of internal bleeding amid crushed skull chest and abdomen with a fractured foot. This was Athens County s fourth traffic fatality this year.
