Lightning Strikes Two Gallia County Barns Aiding Losses
Two barns in Gallia County were destroyed by separate lightning fires on Monday afternoon. The Green Valley Dairy Corp. barn at Lower River Road, damaged beyond reuse, held about 3000 bales of hay and 1000 bales of straw along with eight purebred Holstein heifers. A second blaze at the Dent Sheets farm near Northrup consumed the barn, tobacco, hay, wheat, corn, a calf and a large granary. Firefighters fought the blazes for about two hours, aided by neighboring farms and the GSI unit, with losses estimated around twelve thousand dollars for the hay alone and partial insurance coverage reported.
