Organizers push extensive preparations as the Athens County Fair runs alongside the World’s Fair. Management reports intensified exhibits, enhanced safety measures, and expanded visitor activities to showcase local heritage and boost attendance.
Our County Fair is a home affair and deserves the enthusiastic and liberal support and encouragement of all our citizens. The notice urges local residents to back the event with participation and goodwill.
This year’s event in Ohio offers more features, aiming to attract attendees from across the county to meet friends and enjoy a shared experience.
The Speed Ring will be especially attractive with many of the fastest horses already entered. The people of the county are urged to show their interest in the fair by turning out en masse.
In letters and circulars the Wellston Ohio water works trustees argue that a village plant for Athens with five miles of main can be built in sixty days for about 28000 dollars, offering lower rates and municipal control. they cite Wellston and Carthage precedents, dispute franchise costs, and invite bids from multiple contractors under village specifications.
D B Stewart of Athens argues against the water works plan approved last Monday. He claims the franchise to Coon & Co. was flawed and posed a risk of a 15 to 20 thousand dollar loss to the city. He urges a competent engineer, detailed specifications, and competitive bidding to ensure proper costs and placement of pipes and fire plugs.
At a mass meeting of Hocking Valley miners held at Jobs last Friday resolutions were adopted urging delegates to Shawnee convention to vote for cash payments only and to order out all miners in Athens Perry and Hocking counties until balances are paid in cash. Delegates from Nelsonville and New Straitaville mines were instructed to favor accepting the sixty day paper. The Shawnee convention's results are reported elsewhere in this issue.
Washington notes the House passed the Wilson bill for unconditional repeal of the silver purchasing clause. Senate fate hangs on Vorhees and defection rumors among southern free coinage senators. Cleveland plans to lobby southern Republicans. administration argues no wild cat money this session. Grand Army encampment in Indianapolis draws large turnout and possible rank closure proposal.

Advertises a personal excursion via the Buckeye Route to Chicago for Ohio Fair visitors. Depart Sept 12 from Columbus area with $8 round trip fare, led by L. W. Andman, A. P. agent, offering hotel and travel guidance. Promotes pleasant weather and extended sightseeing time. Also notes reduced Harvest Excursion fares to the West and Midwest via B&O and Ohio Central Lines, with stopovers and agent contact for rates and conditions.
