Frank H Brown 89 Civil War veteran and former Athens resident died in Lancaster yesterday from injuries sustained Monday when struck by a car. He leaves a widow Lucy Morrison and six children: May Wiley, L W Marks, Loring E Brown, Adolph, John, and Alfred. He served in the First West Virginia Cavalry and under General Custer. Burial will take place in West Union Street Cemetery.
Mrs. Noma Allen, 39, of Bashan, died at her parents’ home in Keno after a short illness. She had gone to Keno following the death of Raymond Torrence, foster son of Mr. and Mrs. James Torrence, and remained due to illness. She is survived by husband Hobart Allen and two sons Clayton and Cletus, plus other relatives. Funeral arrangements were not announced.
In a courthouse showdown the Democratic central committee met to decide leadership for two years. Dan A. Rardin clung to the executive chair with Charles L. Jordan as secretary while Dr. C. G. Dew of Nelsonville and supporters formed the Davey Donahey New Deal Club. A roll-call vote 42 to 19 kept the present officers, with 18 opposing members walking out as police restored order.
Milwaukee leaders of the American Bar Association condemn laymen who practice law without authorization. A program to stamp out abuses by bank and trust company employees and other non lawyers is under consideration. In Toledo near Rossford George and Mrs Rinker mourn the death of 12 year old William Rinker. He suffocated after falling into a 100 gallon tank in his father's garage and inhaled gasoline fumes. A year earlier William's 12 year old brother George Jr was killed by an automobile.
The State Relief Commission approved 63 FERA projects in 32 counties providing work for 1,144 people at a cost of 142,540 by counties. Included is Athens County Nelsonville street improvements amounting to 14,740.
Secretary of State George G Myers told 36 Democrats gathered for a county victory dinner that the Constitution was drafted by a Democrat and that it does not require the “petty defense of Morgans and Fesses” as he voiced support for the Roosevelt administration.
Leona Menser, a 20 year old Coshocton County girl, testified she traveled from Ohio to Clarion to marry Join B Kelly and shot him as he reached to strike her. Neighbors testified to her good character while defense counsel argued Kelly lured women to his farm for marriage proposals.
Mae Strode of Amesville awaits the October term of the Athens County Grand Jury charged with manslaughter in the death of John Sunday. Strode pleaded not guilty and posted a $3,000 bond after arraignment before Magistrate C. H. Porter. Prosecutor John W. Bolin filed charges after questioning witnesses. Sunday's car was parked off the road when struck by Strode's vehicle, injuring Sunday fatally. four other passengers were unharmed.
A head on crash on the Midland Trail near Barboursville killed Opal Samples 27 and Mrs Grace Cox of Eagle and seriously injured two men W Roy Hmobittzell of Charleston and Jennings Newman 33 of Paint Creek. Newman said he picked up the women in Eagle.
San Francisco reports a major gold transfer as ingots valued between 1 billion and 2.25 billion dollars move to the Denver Mint under heavy guard. Military detail notes a high security operation reflecting a historic scale of gold movement.
