Legislature Creates Athens County Municipal Court
The state legislature approved a bill to abolish both County and Municipal Courts and create a countywide Athens County Municipal Court. The law, effective Jan 1 1968, will end Judge George Schoonover’s career and set a $8500 minimum salary for the new post. John Newcomb could seek the seat, with a countywide election slated for Nov 7 and filing deadlines shortened to 30 days. The county will share about two fifths of the court’s cost, while Nelsonville mayor’s courts remain unchanged. Athens County Commissioners welcomed the act after earlier opposition. Jane Pancake resigns as county court clerk effective Dec 31.
