In Moab Utah rescuers battled carbon monoxide as 25 miners remained trapped after an explosion. Ventilation work was needed to reach the deeper sections where the men are believed buried. Authorities noted the shaft depths and safety challenges while continuing the search efforts.
Thousands gathered from the Washington monument to the Lincoln Memorial to demand civil rights action. Police estimated 100000 turnout as leaders met with Senate and House figures to discuss the administration program.
Rescuers press on to find Louis Bova missing since Aug 13 after Henry Throne aged 28 and David Fellin 58 were saved from a Hazleton coal mine cave-in. W E B DuBois founder of the NAACP died in Accra Ghana at age 95. He joined the Communist party in 1961 at 93 and later moved to Ghana becoming a citizen. Born in Great Barrington Massachusetts he studied at Fisk Harvard and earned a Harvard PhD in 1895.

A rare tornado struck central Jutland Denmark tearing through between Faarvang and Gern leaving about 50 houses destroyed. A dozen people were injured and many farm animals killed as it carved a two mile path leaving widespread destruction.
