Stager Hopes Swimmers Set More World Records in Belgrade
US team head coach Gus Stager expects a strong showing at the World Aquatic Championships in Belgrade with a blend of youth and experience. 16-year-old Jo Harshbarger of Lake Washington Swim Club set a world record in the 1500-meter freestyle at the AAU championships, while Rick DeMont of Marin Aquatic Club broke the American and world standard in the same event. The Santa Clara team led the women’s title race, but the men’s team title hangs on AAU ruling after a protest by George Haines over a Gatorade swimmer.

Mark Donohue won the Can-Am race at Road America in Elkhart Lake Wisconsin for a third straight time. He set a track speed record with 122053 mph in qualifying and an average speed of 114021 mph on Sunday despite 95 degree heat and a four mile twisting layout.
