Athens County’s eight-second annual fair closes as clear skies and sunny forenoon draw a near record crowd. Ten thousand attend Thursday session with Lon Dewey setting a new mark. West Union Street fills as spectators flock to the Fairgrounds for the final day.
The Athens County Fair drew crowds with 4-H Club demonstrations, a parachute jump by Anna Lee, and harness races. Lon Dewey horse set a record in the 2:14 trot final heat, finishing 2:08. Afternoon racing offered a 2:13 pace purse 225, a 2:24 trot purse 200, and a 2:24 pace purse 200.
Mrs. Clara Cash, 46, found dead at the Toledo home of Gustav D. Koehler, from whom she had divorced three years earlier. A poison bottle and a suicide note were found. coroner's verdict was death by own action.
Akron report says Roberta Bowles a 16-year-old nursemaid was shot by a year-old boy she cared for when he, using a toylike command to "stick em up," fired from an old revolver found at the Pates home in Hometown. She remained in critical condition at Citizen's Hospital.
Five persons were killed and one injured when a Pennsylvania Railroad train struck an automobile at a crossing in Grooms Landing Columbia Pa. The accident occurred today as a special train collided with the auto. Roy Covault, 25, was severely burned at his farm near Troy when a cigarette sparked clothing while he was dusting thistles with sodium chlorate.
The Central German Methodist Conference announced it will transfer its 79 churches across six states to the Methodist Episcopal Church conferences.
Ed Korn King Kottwitz retained his title by eating 50 ears in Minnesota's Harvest Festival to set a new world record, while Mrs. L. W. Lindstrom defeated Pauline Lewis for the women's championship with 44 ears. Berge Simonson and Louis Manders placed second and third among men.
A hurricane sweeping from the Tropics across six states caused 47 deaths and about 15 million dollars in property damage. Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, and the District of Columbia accounted for most fatalities as floods and ruin spread from Norfolk to Philadelphia. Debris clearance and line restoration efforts were underway, and rescues aided the City of Norfolk steamer grounding near Poconoke Sound.
In Hyde Park New York on August 25 President Roosevelt and Secretary Woodin revised the government fiscal plan. Woodin insisted he is not inflating and will resign nothing changed. Dr. H. T. Houf of Athens will address an open air community meeting sponsored by the Methodist and Christian Churches in New Marshfield on Sunday night at 8 o'clock. The event will be held on the school grounds for residents of the area.
Four unions on the Great Lakes sent tentative wage and bargaining codes to NRA officials in Washington. The proposal covers 6000 seamen cooks firemen and other vessel workers and seeks a permanent lake shipping code with a six hour day and minimum wages of 105 monthly for able seamen and 77 for ordinary seamen.
Eastern market terminals will open Monday to receive pigs and sows for government sale under the emergency hog plan. Prices range from 9.50 per hundredweight for 25 to 30 pound pigs down to 6 for 90 to 100 pounds, with sows bought at market price plus 4 per head plus no dockage. About a million sows and four million pigs will be purchased nationwide.
In Columbus on August 25 an ambulance hit Alex Medson, 1, leaving him in critical condition with skull fractures and internal injuries. The ambulance was racing to the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad yards where inspector John Schul tise 43 had been injured. Schul tise died before the ambulance arrived. Fred Stormont drove the ambulance.

Government power policy notes TVA may compete with private firms to keep rates low. Director Lilienthal says TVA will first provide cheap power in the Tennessee Valley Basin and may extend beyond to protect public interests. The guiding rule is the lowest rate compatible with sound financial policy. TVA plans to serve a city over 250,000, likely Birmingham, Memphis, Atlanta, or Louisville.
Complaints accusing NRA employers of discharging and intimidating workers to block union organizing were filed with recovery administrator Miss Mary E. Woods. The trio submitting the charges includes William Dawson AFL treasurer William Murphy of the Teamsters union and Trent Longo of the Brotherhood of Painters.

Columbus August 25 A public authority to conduct slum elimination projects was recommended for passage in the Lawrence Bill by the General Assembly special joint taxation committee. The bill creates a board that may borrow from the Federal Government under the National Industrial Recovery Act and receive outright grants for slum elimination efforts.

POMEROY Aug. 26. Emmett Larkin recently arrested for stealing telephone wire from poles near Long Bottom was committed to the Industrial School at Lancaster this morning by Probate Judge 8. A. McCullough. Joe Wright of Syracuse was lodged in the county jail for non payment of an old fine. The case of Robert Owens, deaf mute arrested at Hobson Thursday, will be investigated by New York Central Railroad detectives. A detective from Charleston West Virginia is expected here today.
Mrs. Frank Weekley aged 46 died last night at the family home on Sugar Creek after a long illness. She leaves a husband, her aged father J. P. Clester, and brother W. A. Clester of Zanesville. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 PM with Rev. Gilbert Courtney officiating. burial in West Union Street Cemetery Athena.
Pomeroy August 2 staff special after questioning Thursday night about a Wednesday fire that destroyed a five room farm house belonging to W A Compton near Langasville Mr and Mrs Delbert Goens were released from the county jail. Investigation will continue by county officers. Compton said the Goens had been living rent free but moved out Wednesday evening. he did not know they were leaving until after the fire.
