Columbus Aug 24 A U P report on Governor White's committee hearings shows proposals to aid home and farm owners within law. Suggestions include tax lien certificates for delinquent taxes and mortgage moratorium with redemption, plus longer bond maturities and tax payment installments.
Storms over the mid Atlantic and adverse winds delay Capt. James A Mollison from starting his return flight to Europe. He will not start before Friday after consulting with Dr James H Kimball of the U S Weather Bureau Amy Johnson plans a solo east to west trans Atlantic flight next month aiming to be the first woman to do so and says she hopes to persuade her husband to permit it
Fire destroyed the Old Commodore the lakeside hotel at Put-In-Bay Ohio, leaving ruins after a blaze that leveled the 40 year old structure. The Beebe House era sheltered many Civil War era southerners and Jefferson Davis’s widow spent summers there.

A non stop Atlantic race between two American monoplane teams ended in Newfoundland as one aircraft crashed at Darby’s Harbor in Placentia Bay while the other landed safely at Burgeo. Enna Jortsch piloted by Thor So berg and Carl Petersen escaped injury. Green Mountain Bay piloted by Clyde Allen Lee and John Bochkon landed safely at Burgeo after departing Barre Virginia. A second piece notes Col George R. Hutchinson and eight aboard prepared for a second European leg in a Sikorsky amphibian with crew including his wife and two daughters.
A motorized army of 10 000 miner pickets leaves Staunton to invade Southern Illinois coal regions. In Benton Franklin County Sheriff Robinson mobilizes about 1 000 deputies to keep strikers out as protesters assemble in Gillespie and plan a large march toward Dowell and Franklin County with potential clashes.
NEW PHILADELPHIA Aug 24 Mayor W F Hurst refused to rescind park permission for a Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company mining workforce picnic at Tuscora Park Harrison County. He said the park is public property and no discrimination can be shown.
Deputy sheriffs fired tear gas along a highway near Council Bluffs to disperse striking farmers trying to push up prices by withholding produce. About 50 men allegedly opened a Danbury freight car, unloading pigs and forcing owner M Barry to repack them. The clash paused after gas exposure, traffic resumed, and Omaha Creamery hiked milk prices from 90 cents to $2 per cwt, a gain farmers hailed as a victory.
William Hill and Walter Guthrie were charged after allegedly breaking a gas pump lock at the Root Filling Station near Coolville on August 20 and stealing 10 gallons of gasoline. Hill paid a $10 fine plus costs after pleading guilty to petit larceny, while Guthrie remained jailed in Athens County pending parole status. Other cases: Louis Dean bound over on a separate charge in Columbus. John Gift pleads not guilty to reckless driving and is bound over to common pleas court.
Cincinnati report says 20 year old Stanley Batts at Longview State Hospital perched 14 hours on a 125 foot water tank, threatened to jump as firemen neared. Crowds watched while guards hid, and Batts descended into awaiting officers. Prior escape attempts include a telegraph pole climb.
Donald Bowman, an agricultural student from Bartlett in Washington County, died last week but his dying wish was honored. State Fair Manager Charles Beer granted his request to admit his sheep to the Ohio State Fair exhibit, allowing his brother to exhibit them since the owner could not be present for judging. H D Saxton, the superintendent, supported the appeal in a letter.
Miss Marjorie Pletcher a former Oberlin high school teacher from Forrestville New York chartered an open plane at Washington Airport for a flight to Annapolis. She stood up at night and plunged from the cockpit into the fields near Chesapeake Bay. Searchers continued the hunt for her body today as her death followed months of despondency and talk of suicide.
An exceptional field is expected in the ham ena races at the Athens County Fair on Thursday and Friday. Frank Murphy says many top stables have entered horses including Roy Blizzard Parkersburg W P Merrill New York Harry Short Columbus and the Newhart Brothers and A M Swan Marietta. The Volo owned by Blizzard is a leading 2 13 trot entry. Other strong entries include Sunny Peter Arion Jake Worthy Captain Volo Victor Eiselstein and S S Ruble.
A seven months old baby died and the mother Mrs Gladys True 19 near death in an Akron hospital after being struck while crossing a street by an automobile. The driver of the car was held pending an investigation.
Nate Conaway received a 24 pound sack of free flour for the needy in Martins Ferry and traded it for a half pint of liquor. He was jailed to serve a $100 fine for drunkenness.
In Lorain on August 24 a Lake Shore Electric Line motorman named Bill Lang climbed onto the car fender to rescue three year old Lelia Smith from the tracks near the city. The child wandered onto the line and was saved in a dramatic, storybook fashion.
Athens County Fair draws 541 attendees as 4-H members exhibit 17 Jerseys five Holsteins two Guernseys in calf judging and 12 boys enter pigs with 10 on display. Sheep and poultry showings feature 20 boys participating. Winners announced Thursday with best calf showmanship prize to Harold Terrell.
In Albany New York Republican leaders were to testify at Mayor James J Walker's ouster hearing. The defense argues the probe aims to embarrass the Democratic Party before the November election. Gov Franklin D Roosevelt will begin the session at 130 pm lasting until 11 pm with a possible two hour recess.
Fireworks set for Wednesday night as contestants prepare for Thursday and Friday races. A large crowd attended the grounds this morning to view midway concessions livestock barns and race horses in trial heats. Tonight a Ballyhoo Revue featuring Athena performers drew many to the athletic show strong man acts riding rides and entertainment at the fair. John Barker and Jack Swanson staged the show with singers and dancers including Louise Kempton William Cuury Kenneth Lowmitler and others. Early judging began for bulle and dairy cattle with sheep and hogs slated for open competition today.
Lee Gehrbach arrives from Springfield to fly a 270 mph racer and contest the Bendix Trophy in Los Angeles. Maude Tait Moriarity defends her aerotropy speed title at 187 mph. Roscoe Turner also competes. Jimmie Doolittle enters the Thompson Trophy dash after gear failure. Shell Oil adds five thousand dollars to Thompson and Aeros prize pools for fastest qualifying times.
Lincoln Neb Aug 24 The governor moved to check violence in the farm strike ordering State Sheriff Endres to advise all county sheriffs from Douglas County north to deputize men to uphold the law. Bryan Ohio Aug 4 Only four per cent of real estate taxes in Williams County due in June are unpaid, treasurer Lewis H Robb said today. The record is believed to be the best of any Ohio County this.
President Hoover abandons the five day week for an immediate employment push and plans a two day conference with Federal Reserve district reps to consider methods to expand credit and create jobs. He aims to widen access to credit for industry agriculture and business while balancing labor and consumers. The Labor Department cites 11 023 000 unemployed in June with a July upward trend.
Grayson Kentucky Aug 2 Two persons are jailed on charges connected to the death of Roy Rickey a year old whose body was found hanging from a tree near his Soldier Kentucky home last Saturday Mrs Bitha Rickey 37 stepmother and Jim Andy Day a roomer at the Rickey home have been indicted by a special grand jury as it continues its inquiry into the boy s death.
In Cleveland delegates marked Mooseheart Day at the Loyal Order of Moose annual convention. The event honors Mooseheart, the child city in northern Illinois, noted for caring for thousands of dependent children of deceased members. The order reports over 17 million dollars spent on its perpetuation.
The United Press reports former law clerk Russell T. Sherwood, who handled one million dollars for Mayor James J. Walker, is believed to be in Hawaii or the Philippine Islands or traveling between them.
Ravenna Aug 24 two government agencies said the Exposition Park blaze was suspicious and launched a search for witnesses who might aid their inquiry. The fire destroyed part of the park facilities and is under investigation by police and safety officials.
Canton reports the George Harter Bank resumed business today after being closed since October, marking a return to normal operations for the financial institution and its customers.
