Space Center Houston reports Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad cleared to complete 47 orbits of Gemini 5 with eight day aim. Mission control tracks an imaginary Agena rendezvous testing ground and sleeping schedules improve as oxygen pressure recovers.
U S warplanes hit Ban Thach hydroelectric plant and dam 80 miles south southwest of Hanoi for the third day. Thirteen aircraft plus four Phantoms targeted the site and no flooding followed. In another raid 16 Thunderchiefs struck within 31 miles of China near Dien Bien Phu. The 1st Division reported 25 Viet Cong killed in a search and destroy northwest of Nha Trang. Marine patrols wiped out a three man Viet Cong mortar team near Da Nang.
Washington reports a small rise in optimism within the Johnson administration about the Viet Nam conflict. Officials cite the Chu Lai victory and ongoing bombing effects, while cautioning that major setbacks remain and no quick victory is assured.
Morganfield Ky Job Corps officials moved to resume normal training after a Friday riot at the Ca' Breckinridge center. Thirteen students left the program, six were transferred, and seven had charges dropped. FBI investigates protection racket claims as officials question up to 150 students involved and assess absences.
President Johnson vetoed a 1.78 billion military construction bill over a base closing provision that would delay closures for 120 days after reporting plans. Chairman L Mendel Rivers said the House Armed Services Committee would move quickly to revise the restriction and seek a compromise acceptable to both sides. The bill returns to the committee for possible drafting of a new reporting provision.
In Bonn former Chancellor Konrad Adenauer challenged Chancellor Ludwig Erhard over the U S arms control draft. Adenauer 89 campaigns for a seat in the Sept 19 election while Erhard calls the plan an important contribution to NATO defense. Weather outlook notes near normal temps with scattered showers late midweek.
Washington dispatch reports Rep. Clarence J. Brown of Ohio died early today at Bethesda Naval Hospital at age 72. A longtime Republican leader in the House, he represented the 7th Ohio district for 27 years and chaired the House Rules Committee. Born July 14, 1893, he started in Ohio politics as lieutenant governor in 1919 and played a key role in paving Hoover Commission work.
In Los Angeles Francis Keppel, commissioner of education, warned at the AFL-CIO American Federation of Teachers convention that while space exploration advances, public schools still graduate functional illiterates. He criticized underpaid staff and closed playgrounds, challenging educators to refute his indictments.
Washington lawmakers push through immigration reform and higher education funding as the House and Senate rush to finish work by mid September. Senate consideration focuses on a 4.3 billion public works bill a 3.36 billion foreign aid authorization and a 47 billion defense appropriation with 1.7 billion for Vietnam war funding. The tax on foreign investments sales remains under discussion to curb capital outflow.
In Athens Premier Elias Tsirimokos plans to ban downtown protests and authorize rapid police action after a six hour riot Friday night injuring more than 150. He seeks order over further rioting following the death of former Premier George Papandreou.
Timken Roller Bearing Co union leaders authorized a strike at midnight unless a new contract is reached or negotiations extend to September 8. About 10,000 United Steelworkers District 17 members in Canton, Columbus and Wooster supported the move amid ongoing talks on the expired contract.
Funeral services for Matthew H. Murphy Jr a noted Klan attorney who defended a Klansman in a civil rights worker murder were held in Birmingham after his death in a Friday night traffic accident. Hundreds of segregationists attended the tribute.
The Defense Department lists 17 U S servicemen as detained by Vietnamese forces with no clear POW designation. Causes include ambiguous war status and amended Missing Persons Act definitions. Seven detained in 1963, seven in 1964, four in 1965, one escaped.
