Vinton County Treasurer John Crow announced the 1962 tax settlement totaling 522 697.02 for real estate and public utilities, with half-year collections of 294 597.10 and 228 081.92 plus a final McArthur sewer assessment. The rise over 1961 stems from new construction and utility valuations.
The McArthur Senior Civic Club will meet Tuesday at 7 30 p m in the Memorial building club rooms to elect officers for the coming year.
The Vinton County Board of Elections invalidated two fall election candidates. One sought Madison Tro trustee, the other Hamden board of education. One petition was improperly drawn, the other lacked valid signatures. names of the disqualified candidates were withheld. The note on tomatoes is an aside.
A raccoon shot while trying to enter a Route 68 home near Lane Graves farm McArthur Route 2 was sent to Nelsonville for rabies tests by Health Commissioner Dr. H. M. Boocks. The shooter was Pauk Knose from Columbus.
Jackie Matte son of Hamden enlists in the Army for three years on his 17th birthday. Sgt. Houser at the Athens recruiting station announces the enlistment. He will train at Fort Knox Kentucky and receive a 14 day leave before advanced training in heavy equipment. He attended Hamden High School and scored highly on Army exams.
Clarence Richard Hunter 16 of Reynoldsburg was fined 25 dollars and five days in the juvenile ward of Vinton County jail by Juvenile Judge W H Lohr. He was convicted of assault and battery on Raymond Hayes theater manager at the Vinton Theater on August 3.

A 14 year old riding mare named Dolly belonging to barber Charles McDonald foaled a 60 pound stud colt named Champ a month early in McArthur on Saturday morning. Gestation is typically 340 days and Champ appears normal. Cuba and the United States share baseball as a national sport.
