Forest Fire Stirs Courage in Bitter Root Battle

Ranger John Ward recounts 14 days on the line in Montana's Bitter Root National Forest where 5000 firefighters battled a blaze that burned 32 000 acres. Indians from the San Domingo tribe aided crews as bulldozers carved fire breaks and rangers planned a military style campaign amid extreme heat and lightning strikes. Two dozen hours a day on duty, crews faced toppled trees and shifting flames until rain finally slowed the monster fire.
