In Boise and Kansas City Eisenhower argues extremes lead to tyranny while criticizing the Truman era and urging a middle road. He attacks centralization in Washington and vows a presidency that serves the people, avoiding arrogance and dissipation of power. He omits direct reference to Stevenson by name.
Gov Adlai Stevenson prepared rough drafts of ten to twelve speeches for a Western campaign tour starting in September. He plans a Denver kickoff before moving to the Pacific Northwest and California, mixing rest with writing and a news conference. He argued corruption must be dealt with ruthlessly and vowed to appoint incorruptible, qualified officials to government jobs. Stevenson said foreign policy remains the nation’s greatest problem and stressed the stakes for the United States and the free world.
Marine Maj. William Earl Barber of San Diego California was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Truman at the White House for heroism in the Northeast Korea battle in late 1950. Barber dedicated the honor to the Marines who fought with him as they held off more than 10 encircling Chinese in icy mountains.
A bronze tablet for Maj Don S Gentile, Ohio's top World War II ace, will be unveiled Friday on the north side of the State House. The ceremony coincides with the national convention of Unico National, the veterans group Gentile belonged to. Gentile was killed in a jet crash in Maryland January 25, 1951.
Berlin reports the U S Army post exchanges in Germany are ordered to curtail sales of king size cigarettes to reduce the black market traffic. Longies fetch 18 marks per carton, about $4.28, while regular sizes sell for 15 to 16 marks about 50 cents less.

Washington A top Justice Department official is described as a prime target of House investigators in hearings set to begin next Tuesday. Rep Chelf of Kentucky notes the official remains unnamed but in the department amid a shake up under James McGranery. James Mullally, 52, a veteran Crim Division lawyer tied to the racket unit, was suspended for review of outside activities.
In Korea a wall of water swept across a river during a training exercise. The Eighth Army reports 12 bodies recovered and 18 soldiers missing from the 45th Infantry Division as grappling boats search the river. Rain from a nearby typhoon fueled the flood that struck a sandbar where the platoon tried to ford the stream.
H. J. Yoakum of Houston Texas was chosen as president of the Amateur Trapshooting Association of America succeeding Frank E. Dissinger of Lebanon Ohio. Vice presidents named include C. E. Huber of Tiffin Ohio and L. M. Krieg of Newark Ohio. Ray E. Loring of Vandalia was appointed secretary and manager.
President Truman said he knows nothing about any mess in his administration at a news conference. He avoided comment on Stevenson’s criticism and on Sparkman’s claim the steel strike was mishandled. He dismissed being a target of the Democratic candidates and said he is the key to the campaign, noting the party must run on Roosevelt and Truman records. He also couldn't recall saying Eisenhower garbled statements.
An ox tramples a mine and a farmer is wounded in Korea. He is evacuated to a hospital, sleeps on a stretcher, and is later lifted by an eggbeater helicopter to Inchon. The frazzled farmer is brought back to his field after the odd airborne scare.

Eleven year old Richard Metzger died after a heavy fishing sinker struck him behind the ear during a split moment incident on the Mac River. Gerald Lambert, fourteen, said he began to cast and the weight ripped loose and fell on Metzger. Deputies described the weight as the cause and noted Metzger died from a brain hemorrhage.
At Fort Bragg North Carolina a mass jump of about 3000 paratroopers is planned to showcase 82nd Airborne Division capabilities for 46 military attaches from 37 nations. Howitzers and jeeps are scheduled to be dropped during the aerial display.
Louisiana Democrats vote 77 to 9 by the Democratic State Central Committee to pledge the state's 10 electors to Adlai Stevenson while withholding endorsement of the party ticket. The Stevenson-Sparkman ticket appears on the November ballot with the rooster emblem as the party standard.

In Columbus two men shot their wives then killed themselves in nearly identical cases. Earl S. Shuster, 34, wounded his wife Jean 21 before dying on a downtown sidewalk. Clarence Winn, 65, operator of a grill, died about an hour later after a family quarrel.
A Western Farmer freighter split in two after a collision with the Norwegian tanker Bijorg Holm in the English Channel. Two British lifeboats rescued 37 crewmen including Capt. Gunar Utvik, landing at Ramsgate and Dover. The tanker remained undamaged.
U S air forces launched two massive bombing raids in Northwest Korea. Thirty eight Okinawa based B29s dropped 350 tons on Pyongyang causing large fires and destruction over 400 acres. Additional waves hit Osu cement plant and Namyang targets with 59 buildings destroyed in prior days.
