A suspect in a little girl’s murder is held in Logan jail on a first degree murder charge. The case unfolds as investigators pursue strategic avenues in the high profile inquiry.
Raymond Phelps, 25, of Buchtel O, is jailed in Hocking county awaiting trial on first degree murder charges in the death of nine year old Frances Jewell. He pleaded not guilty at arraignment and is held without bond. Bloodhounds traced the victim’s path from the creek to Greendale to Phelps, with findings including a bloodied rock and hidden clothing.
Mexico City reports Carranza holds confidence in Wilson and the American people while Ambassador Bonillas seeks immediate withdrawal of U S cavalry and planes after crossing the Texas border near Candelaria. The Mexican president declined to state a view beyond reciting telegraphed facts. Separately a home electric shoe cleaning machine driven from a light socket is announced.
Crowds flood Athens city and fairgrounds despite cloudy skies with a blazing sun. Soldiers ex service men register at booths while Rainbow and Ladies bands perform. A record turnout follows the soldier celebration prep with trains and autos bringing visitors. fireworks planned and no incidents reported.
The remains of Mrs. Christine Law Nye arrived from Buenos Aires with her husband Dr. Don C Nye. Services are set for Friday at 2 PM at the First Christian church in Chauncey followed by interment in the Nye cemetery.
Washington reports relief among army officers that the Eighth Cavalry may be pulled back from Mexico within days. The expedition began early Tuesday following a “hot trail” but if the trail cools and bandits vanish in rough terrain the search could end. The State Department has not received a protest from Mexico.
In Youngstown Ohio on August 21 union officials announced a nationwide strike could be set for ten days unless United States Steel Corp agrees to a conference with union leaders. A recanvass of twenty four unions showed 98 percent in favor of striking to press for eight hour day eight hour week rest day, double overtime rates, abolition of company unions and medical exams. A six member sub committee including Samuel Gompers John Fitzpatrick and W Z Foster will meet steel executives.
The Chicago delegation in Washington plans talks with Senator Johnson of California and Illinois lawmakers to press the government to bring 4,000 Illinois soldiers home from Liberia.
President Wilson said he cannot proclaim a state of peace until the Senate ratifies the league. The statement came in reply to questions from Senator Fall of New Mexico, dated August 21, noting he lacks the power to act unilaterally before ratification by the Senate.
Washington Aug 21 Extensions of the food control act to strengthen the campaign against profiteers and hoarders were to be reported to the house by the agriculture committee action promised before the weekend Senate leaders said they were far from agreement on any program to reduce the high cost of living Palmer urged including wear ing apparel and food containers in the act. The committee favored fines up to 5000 dollars and two years imprisonment for profiteers. The program seen as largely abandoned for executive price fixing aim. Senate leadership predicted no immediate action in the Senate.
United Press reports Senate leaders aim to ratify the peace treaty without amendments or reservations. Opponents reject Wilson’s separate interpretative content plan, with Hitchcock and Pittman dismissing the administration’s proposed resolution as mere paper. Senators insist on clear agreement on sovereignty and treaty provisions before ratification.
Six train crew members died and fifteen were injured yesterday near Traverse City when a Marquette freight collided head on with passenger No. 6 at Beitner. The Pere Marquette blamed the freight crew for not clearing the track as ordered.
Edward O'Connor 35 and Miss Gladys Kesterson 17 were being returned to Elyria Ohio to face Mann Act charges. Police say O'Connor has a wife and children in Elyria and the pair lived as man and wife under the name Edward Delaney after meeting in a five and ten cent store. O'Connor works for the Lake Shore and Michigan railway.
