John C Robinson, an early Ames township pioneer born in 1803 in Wood County West Virginia, died last Sunday and was buried Tuesday. He moved to Ohio at age two and settled on the same Ames farm since 1836, serving early settlers in Federal Valley as an informal physician. He was a devout Christian, valued citizen, and honest kindly man whose death marks the loss of another veteran pioneer in the county’s transition from wilderness to a populous Ohio community.
Town rumor claims James Townsend was whipped by a White Caps band for alleged cruelty to his family after he allegedly threw a beer bottle at his wife in a state of intoxication. Accounts vary including a claim of a child’s death. Sheriff’s warrants issued. deputy went to Carbondale to arrest the assailants.
A group of Athens bicyclists rode fourteen miles to Nelsonville on Sunday in an hour and thirty five minutes. Heavy rain on the return made the trip arduous as they walked and pushed their wheels for five hours, wasting time and dampening the outing.
Dr. J. P. Gordy spoke to a full house on University Extension with residents taking action to secure benefits for Athens. Major Townsend and others gave effective remarks. a committee including Professor Evans Supt. Wheaton Maj. Jewett and Dr. Gordy was formed to oversee the effort. Teachers showed strong interest and will promote the movement in their communities. The Center Building reception Thursday evening was well received and similar to prior events.
Sept Francis of Gloucester attends this week with new arrivals Miss Hettie Howard from Millfield and Miss Gertrude Brawley of Amesville. The Institute business meeting is Friday at 2 PM to elect officers and conduct important business.
Dr Gordy will lecture Thursday night on Henry Clay. Eve rybody invited. The talk was postponed week before last and should attract teachers and residents. The piece urges school boards to require Institute attendance for hiring. those who have not attended should be considered only with good reason to improve teaching quality and pupil benefits.
Dispatches report Robert Gilbert twenty five found dead on a railroad track near the depot after a camp fire. Post mortem suggested foul play but no arrests have been made with authorities leaning to death by drunken intoxication rather than murder.
The next annual reunion of the surviving veterans of the 92d O V I will be held on the 22nd 28th and 24th of next month at Lower Salem in Washington county. Recruited largely in Athens county the regiment earned fame at Perryville where it suffered more casualties than any other unit in the battle. The veterans are noted for their esprit and the gathering is expected to be well attended and highly interesting.
Hon D L Sleeper addressed a large Rapebitonné gathering at Homerog to promote the ab nay vo Jonge club organization, urging support and participation.
The Athens County Election Board outlines booth counts for 107 polling sites under the new Australian ballot system. It notes that township clerks must report officials and terms, while the board may set booth styles, arrange portable voting houses, and require larger ballot boxes for this fall.

Travelers head to Colorado Springs and Pelanee awaiting return.
Messrs Sayer Mauck Bean and Bush organized a Republican Club in Canaanville on Saturday evening with 25 to 30 members. Officers elected were President C. W. Ham Vice President R. W. Marshall Secretary E. E. Halbirt Treasurer Harvey Birch. Mauck gave a spirited address to start the kickoff.
On last Friday in Mayor Minton's court John Watts, a young Athens rough, was sentenced to sixty days in the Cincinnati Works for being drunk and disorderly. Fremont Riley of near Garden, Lodi township, fined $20 and costs and committed in default after resisting arrest and being hand in hand with Watts. Marshal Finsterwald and Deputy Port used force to subdue them and ensure confinement.
