Athens Council approves recreation unit plan and cable rate changes
The Athens City Council approved a recreation unit plan to develop facilities on Ohio University Airport land and discussed a proposed city charter commission. Athens City Schools See Estimated Tax Rates Drop
The Athens City District board heard estimated tax rates showing a bond retirement cut of three tenths of a mill as tax base falls. Superintendent Herderson credited prudent funds investment and noted bond retirement at 3.20 mills, down nearly two mills from two years prior, offsetting a five mill rise in operating costs. The district, with 28 outside and 4 inside mills, expects 1.6518 million outside and 236 thousand inside. The board approved a $100,000 advance from the county auditor to buy four buses and hired five new teachers while accepting resignations. Minor actions included security appointments, rental of Sugar Creek School, and calendar tweaks. The meeting adjourned at 7:40 pm with bids to be reviewed August 27.

Extradition Begun For Two Prisoners In Ohio County
Extradition proceedings have started for two men held in the Athens County jail. James Charles Napier, 36, of Harlan Kentucky, was arrested Aug 9 on a warrant for escape from a Kentucky reformatory. Kentucky began extradition. Napier to be held until Ohio governor is contacted. Danny Wade, 20, of 14344 Morris Ave, Athens, was arrested Sunday on a warrant for failing to appear in Cleveland County Court Oklahoma on bond. Wade had lived in Athens for under six weeks. John A.
