In Gallipolis Mary Holley age 86 was found dead in her two room home. Constable Roy M Johnson investigates a possible robbery and staged conflict. Light bulbs fingerprints and a torn dress are examined for clues as two suspects are questioned.
Congress moved quickly to provide emergency funds to about 40 federal agencies including the Army Navy Air Force Atomic Energy Commission Veterans Administration and Interior Department. The stopgap measure delays a fiscal deadline until Sept 15 and heads to President Truman for signature to avert payroll and expense shortfalls.
Cleveland Federations of Labor joins CIO and independent unions to back a joint political action group. William Finegan says AFL leaders approved formation of a coalition with the Cleveland Industrial Union Council, railroad brotherhoods, and other unions to oppose Sen Robert A Taft's re election bid.
Hopkinsville Ky six women died when their car and a soldiers car collided with a transport truck between here and Camp Campbell. The women include Mrs Lucy Roper hospital administrator and Miss Betsy Cason hospital secretary among others. Two soldiers were injured while a third walked into camp uninjured and all were placed under guard.
Washington reports business loans increasing as merchants stock up for Fall and Christmas sales. Federal Reserve data show an $80 million weekly loan rise across leading city banks, with widespread gains except Cleveland which fell by $7 million.
New York police report 29 year old Martha Beck and 34 year old Raymond Fernandez were found guilty of first degree murder in the strangling of Janet Fay on January 4. There was no mercy recommendation and the verdict carries mandatory death. The Bronx Supreme Court jury announced the decision at 7 30 a m EST after a night of deliberation.
Emmett Edwards a 15 year old from Syracuse won the Meigs County Messenger boys bicycle championship at the Rocksprings fairgrounds finishing the half mile in 19 33 while narrowly defeating Harold Hysell of Pomeroy Route 3. Mayor James A Rhodes congratulated him as the prize was a fielder's glove. Edwards advances toward the All American Newspaperboys Derby with a path to the Athens County Fair on Aug 22 and possibly the Columbus national championship with large scholarships and a Schwinn bicycle prize if he wins.
Police to drag the Ohio River this afternoon in a bid to locate Betty Hoffman a waitress missing since early today. A three page note found at her home on Main Street says she is tired of living and will take the cowardly way out. Her eight year old daughter Carol Sue is staying with a sister in Parkersburg.
The government may spend about 150 million for grain storage this year. The Commodity Credit Corporation expects space for 500 million bushels, with bids showing 50 million bushels needed and contracts awarded to 19 firms for 13 790 semi permanent bins totaling 112 837 640 bushels. Storage cost was estimated under 30 cents per bushel.
Two days after breaking his neck in a dive into shallow water, 18 year old Navy seaman Clarence Cole died in Bay City Michigan. He was on leave from Norfolk Virginia visiting Glenn Willman of Standish and swimming in the Rifle River when the accident occurred.
Dr. C. H. Creed superintendent of Athens State Hospital underwent major surgery at 8 a.m. today in Holzer Hospital Gallipolis. Dr. Charles E. Holzer Sr. said the surgical condition was not as serious as anticipated but Creed’s condition will be critical for several days.
Washington AP reports the 1.45 billion dollar arms for Europe program facing a strong House attempt to cut nearly in half. Rep Richards proposes halving Western European allotment and restricting obligations after June 30 while urging European nations to unite and meet half way. The plan would be revisited early next year to judge good faith and cooperation against possible Russian aggression.
The United States grants an export license to Yugoslavia for a $3 million steel mill. The move aims to aid Tito after a split with Moscow, despite defense objections, and may advance World Bank loan discussions. This marks the first postwar transfer of war potential material to a Communist nation.
The Rev. E. Stacy Matheny, 78, former chaplain of the Ohio State Senate, died Wednesday in Emergency Hospital, Washington D C. He had lived in Falls Church, Virginia, and was admitted after a blood clot formed. He served as Senate chaplain from 1921 to 1949 and led several Ohio churches including Central Community Church 1940 to 1947.
Forty new polio cases boost Ohio's total to 583 since January 1. Sum mit County reports 14 new cases followed by Cuyahoga five, Franklin four, Montgomery three, and two cases in Miami and Muskingum. One case each in multiple counties. A second Columbus polio death, 16-year-old Charles Alkire, was recorded Wednesday.
East Liverpool reports William Green, 18, of Wellsville, died at City Hospital from third degree burns suffered Tuesday night in a fire at the McClain Fire Brick Co works in nearby New Salisbury.
Miss Florence Bondi of Cleveland was proclaimed Miss Ohio acceptable to represent America in the national beauty pageant. The designation marks a notable achievement for Bondi and Cleveland in the pageant arena.
President Truman urged the press to suspend judgment on Maj. Gen. Harry H. Vaughan until he testifies before the Senate five percenter inquiry. An attorney testified before a committee investigating police brutality that a police officer hit an intoxicated man in the face multiple times in the city jail office. Lt. Ramon T. George, stationed at Port Columbus, described another incident where a restrained inmate swung at an officer, drew blood, and was later moved unconscious with a battered face.
Hamilton scene report states Glenn Tipton, a child about five years old, was fatally injured Wednesday when struck by one automobile and then struck by a second vehicle near his home five miles southeast of Hamilton. Coroner Garrett Boone issued the finding.

In Calais France Jose Cortinas 32 a Cuban halted his attempt to swim the English Channel after covering half the distance toward Dover. Winds and rough seas delayed Shirley Mays planned Cap Griz Nez to Dover swim from Somerset Massachusetts as weather worsened.
The new natural resources commission named Lew Reese, owner of Scio Pottery in Scio Ohio, as chairman. Reese was elected Wednesday at an organizational meeting of the eight member commission in the new state department of natural resources. John A Slipher was elected vice chairman and Roy Battles was chosen secretary.
Uncle White, 30, Greenfield Ohio, fined 250 dollars and sentenced to 10 days in county jail after a crash near Sabina May 41 for flying an airplane while intoxicated. State patrolmen arrested him after the incident.
A thief cracked the office safe of Dr. Charles M. Note stone, a dentist, and stole $1300 in twenty dollar bills on Wednesday night. The couple had planned to use the money for a vacation, and $700 in traveler's checks were left untouched.
Senators Taft and Bricker of Ohio voted on opposite sides as the Senate defeated a move to kill Plan No 7. The roll was 57 to 32 against killing the reorganization plan, with Bricker voting to kill and Taft voting to preserve.
State liquor enforcement chief Rutkowski pledged to press on after the acquittal of Mounds Club employees Thomas Farley and Emil Ray Rehart on liquor charge claims. Two guards arrested July 9 in the raid face future trial. The club was not authorized to sell liquor.
