Large Coal Operation Closes In Vinton County
McARTHUR Benedict Inc the largest strip coal operator in Vinton County has shut down and begun liquidating assets and equipment. Floyd Benedict Jr cites a coal market shift toward cheap coal as the reason. The firm once employed 55 workers with a 5000 dollar weekly payroll and owned about 3000 acres. It started in 1937 as Benedict Sherman and later expanded operations. retirement plans arise as liquidation proceeds continue.
