Vinton County sales tax receipts fell to 538.55 last week from 976.84 a year earlier. Year to date totals since July 1 reach 2630.21, up from 2225.83 last year. McArthur Marshal William Reffert and Mrs Reffert with daughter depart for California and will be away two weeks. Night Marshal Frank M Wallar will replace Reffert. Morris Collins acts as night marshal.
Graveside services were held at Salem Center cemetery for the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Percy Lambert. The child died at birth at Mason. Surviving are several sisters and brothers along with her parents.
McArthur schools announce two vacancies after Band Director Anthony Violi resigns to join Steubenville and Assistant Coach Jack Donaldson takes military leave. Violi directed music and started the first McArthur band. Donaldson, Pataskala native, reports to Great Lakes on September 13 as a Navy radio man. A replacement for Donaldson will be sought.
Extensive repairs on Route 160 one mile south of Radcliff due to a cave-in from an abandoned coal mine shaft will be carried out by the Vinton County division of the State Highway Department. The shaft, three feet in diameter and seven feet deep, opened last Wednesday. a clam shovel began excavation on Tuesday. The shaft will be filled with stone and the road repaired while traffic remains open.
McArthur judge Arlen Chatfield was appointed to the Publica tions Committee of the Ohio State Bar Association by President Paul C. Weick on the recommendation of Aronhold C. Schapiro.
Logan and Hocking county leaders voted unanimously to pursue merging the Vinton and Hocking library districts. A meeting in McArthur will involve officials and public groups to plan the merge and improve service with state funds. A $25,000 minimum is needed to meet standards, potentially via a .4 mill levy, with a bookmobile funded by a $4,300 state grant.
Draft registrants moved to Class 2-C farm deferments will have classifications reviewed by state selective service headquarters. Vinton County board ordered to reclassify farm deferments toward Class 1-A. Seven locals report to Portsmouth for a pre induction physical on Monday Aug 28.
