Consolidation plan cuts travel time on Columbus Charleston route

The Columbus Dispatch reports a proposed absorption of the Kanawha and Michigan Railway by the Hocking Valley Railway. Plans include a six hour 176 mile through passenger run from Columbus to Charleston by eliminating river towns and building a direct main line with branch service to Pomeroy and Gallipolis. A 1600 foot tunnel near Langsville at about 80000 dollars is slated, with a future steel bridge over the Ohio at Point Pleasant costing around 2000000 dollars. A new WV three mile right of way will remove heavy grades and enable larger train loads. Through service Columbus to Charleston will start with crews running the route without changes.
