Minor disturbances flare near Mexico City as protests against the church escalate amid church-state tensions. Secretary Kellogg and President Coolidge discuss U S stance while arrests extend to Contreras Ixtapalapa and Amecameca. Mexico City remains quiet on Sunday with many attending priestless services.
Riots in San Angel six miles from Mexico City injure about a score, three seriously, as Catholics police and federal troopers clash. Twenty one people arrested, many in San Angel, on charges of plotting against the government including Dr Lenora Peredes, a prominent professional woman. The disturbances follow Ascension Day but are not necessarily a sign of wider outbreaks.
Mrs. Catharine Armbrust, 40, of 983 North Fourth street, drowned after stepping beyond her depth in swollen Big Walnut Creek. Husband Louis Armbrust and witnesses failed to rescue her as currents and frantic struggles hindered efforts. Sheriff Gump's boat crews recovered her body six hours later a mile south of the accident site. She leaves a husband, parents Mr and Mrs Frank Keyes, Nelsonville, six brothers, three sisters and two stepchildren.
Columbus report states C B McClintock, prosecutor of Starke county, asked Attorney General Crabbe to appoint James A White, former superintendent of the Ohio Anti Saloon League, as a special assistant in Canton vice investigation. Crabbe is on vacation in Michigan. H H Griswold will relay the request by telephone.
Examiner William Disque affirmed existing coal freight rates from Illinois and Indiana mines to the Chicago district and western territory as reasonable. The rates had been challenged by the Tiliots esa trade bureau in a filing to the Interstate Commerce Commission.
In Buffalo Aug 16 James C Voelker a famed bootlegger now faces the electric chair on a first degree murder charge linked to a poison liquor wave that killed forty six in Canada and Western New York. Prosecutor Guy Moore argues Voelker sold deadly alcohol with reckless indifference while defense contends Voelker did not know the liquor was poisonous. The case hinges on whether Voelker knew of the poison and the legality of bootlegging as a crime.
A $500,000 blaze in Hollywood destroyed the Century film studio and a nearby three story apartment. A young girl seeking revenge for rejection as an actress was believed to have started the fire, with explosions from celluloid film adding a spectacular effect. The Christie studio opposite was saved by a water blanket maintained by firefighters.
Rudolph Valentino, the motion picture star, remained in serious condition a day after emergency surgery for gastric ulcer and appendicitis. Doctors warned of possible peritonitis but said life was not in immediate danger if localized. Valentino, stricken at the Hotel Ambassador, had just arrived from Hollywood for the East premiere of The Son of the Sheik and had challenged an editorial writer to a duel prior to the operation.

Four men were sought in connection with Mildred Pracher's death after she leaped from an automobile to escape attackers. she died from a fractured skull.
The Rev John Alexander Smith rector of Grindon village died today in the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary from bullet wounds. He and housekeeper Hannah Austin were found near death in the rectory Friday. Miss Austin 37 and employed 14 years, died soon after in the rectory library. Smith aged 67 had served Grindon church for 24 years.
Indians and white men joined the search for two bandits who robbed a Union Pacific registered mail car near Rawlins Wyoming. Cowboys National Guardsmen and the region’s Indians scoured the Western Wyoming wastelands centering on the Jackson Hole country as a possible hideout. The pursuit interrupted a Western motion picture shoot.
Herb Parker, who resigned weeks ago to run for sheriff, is reappointed chief by Mayor Alex Moore. Parker resumes leadership at once, with Captain Charles Maple shifting from acting chief to night patrol duties.

Joseph Roach could not be named as assistant due to residency rules. Indictments expected as probes tie city officials to liquor conspiracy and bootleg interests.
In Martins Ferry a family reconciliation conference ended in a fatal shooting. Mrs. Eli Escott died after being shot three times. Her son Frank Davide Davide, 24, and Eli Escott were wounded along with another son Ralph Davidson who was shot in the arm while seeking help. Helen Fix, a daughter, was chased but unharmed. Police charge Eli Escott with the shootings as he attempted suicide.
Three Toledo men were killed when their car was crowded into a ditch near Sand Lake Michigan by another vehicle.
In Waterloo townships former attendees of Meat and Hocking schools will now attend a consolidated school named Hocking. Both Scott and Hocking schools were condemned with the Hocking building relocated to a central site and being converted into a well lighted two room school.
James Binderbasin of Jacksonvilly pleaded guilty to assault and battery charged by his wife Goldie Binderbasin and was fined $10 and costs. Arrest warrant handled by H. A. Sieber. Lewis Carsey of Athens pleaded guilty to intoxication and was fined and costs. arrest by E. C. Mariner.
