President Coolidge convened his cabinet for the first formal meeting since before the Harding era. Topics included an impending coal strike, reparations talks, Europe’s unsettled diplomacy, and Mexico recognition, with emphasis on conciliatory methods to avert labor disruption.
Lexington Ohio August 14 special grand jury will convene next Monday to probe the murder of Mrs Branagan of San Toy. Thomas Smith is jailed on a first degree murder bill filed after the fatal shooting outside a home. Prosecutor Vinogmue says Branagan and Smith had a dispute over insults to Branagan's family leading to blows and a gun. The victim died instantly. this marks Perry county's third first degree murder case in eight years.
Dr George T Harding the late president's physician appeared at his office this morning the first time since the funeral.
A sightseeing motor bus carrying 20 tourists from Tourdes to Gavarnie plunged 250 feet into a mountain torrent near St. Sauveur in the Pyrenees. Twenty-three people were killed and seven seriously hurt when the driver swerved to avoid a peasant woman in the road.
Mrs. Calvin Coolidge would inherit a private White House suite with ten bedrooms, study, libraries, and multiple bathrooms. The new first lady may keep the blue theme or redecorate. Police say Nunie Tsekos 35 confessed to killing his wife Natalie and mother in law Katherine Adams in New Hampshire. He met with J E Russell and Newton M Miller to plan further dry conditions and enforcement, praising Ohio’s leadership and the nation wide example set by the state’s penalties and convictions.
In Brooklyn federal court Judge Joseph W. Woodrough ruled the government may seize British vessels outside the three mile limit involved in landing liquor cargoes. He directed a jury to award $29,999 to the government against Detroit Fidelity & Security Co. over the seizure of the British vessel Marion Mosher in July last year.
Seventy seven years ago Mr Selby was born in a toy house on Marietta Run near Mt Hermon in Athens county. He attended Mt Hermon's Community day last Sunday and is now president of The Selby Shoe Co. of Portsmouth Ohio. The Watch Dog column today notes this life story.
Cleveland reports say the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers has not yet decided on wage talks with railroads but is expected to join with firemen unions for a substantial raise when contracts expire next October.
