James F. Shumaker a Nelsonville attorney was named acting county judge in Judge George Schoonover s absence at Mount St Mary Hospital He will serve until Schoonover returns Shumaker is the only eligible local attorney for the post and Common Pleas Judge John Bolin made the appointment.

Family Swim Night Termed Successful
Robert Burson city recreation director announced Crystal Pool will continue family night swimming on Tuesdays and Fridays through August. He said the swims have been a success and will continue. The pool will close on Labor Day.

Evans Packing Buys Champion Steer At Athens Fair Sale
Evans Packing Co of Gallipolis paid 56 cents per pound for Ruby Keirns champion steer weighing 1,111 pounds at the Athens County Fair junior livestock sale bringing $622.16. Other top bids included Rhonda Keirns 1,103 pounds sold for 36 cents and Tom Weekley 1,099 pounds at 30 cents. Hogs and lambs also drew strong prices with Sea Fout top hog at $1.01 per pound. lambs ranged 95 cents to 86 pounds. The sale featured multiple buyers led by Evans Packing and C E Market of Athens with ten purchases each.
