U S Marines conducted a midnight night helicopter assault near Nam Yen in Elephant Valley, landing in two villages along the Cape River to engage Viet Cong forces. About 20 prisoners were taken, with one enemy killed at dawn as the operation continued under moonlight and tracer fire.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr urged negotiat ions to end the Viet Nam conflict during a Birmingham SCLC convention. He proposed a first step toward peace urging a halt to bombing North Viet Nam and rebuilding destroyed villages as a sign of good faith. He said Ho Chi Minh and Zhou Enlai must show willingness to negotiate and warned the war could widen.
Memorial Day linked rally organizer Parkie Scott of Oregonia Warren County says he plans an August 21 Ku Klux Klan rally in Cuyahoga County. Separate Viet Nam war brief notes describe Allied actions near Can Tho and Pleiku Duc Co, with reported air sorties and no casualties.
