Rioting Convicts At Idaho Penitentiary Injure Inmates

About 50 inmates were high on drugs during a riot at the Idaho Penitentiary in Boise. Two inmates were stabbed and two buildings burned as guards used tear gas on roughly 150 inmates. The uprising centered on a rule allowing clothing changes only every three days in 100 degree heat. Warden Raymond W. May, who said 50 were high on drugs, calmed the riot by promising no punishments and likely addressing the clothing policy. A hospital guard, David Bortz, 25, was stabbed. Charles Rice, 30, was stabbed. and Charles Sharp suffered eye injuries during the melee.

Riot at Prison Ends With Tear Gas and Flames

Inmates riot as guards fire tear gas and a tunnel area is found vacant since Sunday. May and an aide entered amid 150 shouting inmates to quell the disturbance.
