The Titan II missile site in Searcy Arkansas recorded 53 deaths after six more bodies were found in the lower levels of the underground silo. Air Force officials expected the final count as divers prepared to pump water from the silo bottom while the number of civilian workers present during the blast remained uncertain.

Federal registrars begin placing Negroes on the voting rolls in nine Southern counties with no questions on intelligence. The Justice Department seeks to end poll taxes in Texas Virginia and Alabama under the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Dallas County Alabama home of Selma is among the counties to open offices for federal registration.
Columbus bulletin reports Gov. James A. Rhodes signed a measure mandating public transportation for parochial and private school pupils. The new law directs districts to provide or arrange transportation services for eligible students.
Gov. Rhodes sent nine appointments to the Senate Rules Committee for confirmation. Kenneth A. Robison, a Marion Republican and former Ohio House member, is named chairman of the State Racing Commission. Dean L. Collison of Logan is named racing commissioner. Both terms end in 1969.
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved Abe Fortas for the Supreme Court and Thurgood Marshall for solicitor general. Oren Harris for Arkansas district judge also won committee backing. Fortas faced no dissent while Marshall's nomination drew some opposition.
A man returning to his parked car in London Ontario Monday found damage from a hit and run. Two notes left on the windshield described the vehicle a 1962 moss green Pontiac four door sedan with an Upper Canada Village sticker and two occupants a man with dark curly hair and glasses and a woman with blonde hair. Police broadcast the car description and occupants.
Howard A. Cummins reports in Columbus that rural Ohio electricity use rose to a record 7749 kilowatt hours last year as demand is expected to double by 1973. The annual report notes rising rural power needs across the state.
The Catholic Church may abolish its Lenten meat restriction if warranted. Right Rev. Msgr. Raymond J. Gallagher told reporters at a Cleveland news conference on Monday that the regulation could be changed.
About 900 United Auto Workers members began striking at the Hercules Division of Hupp Corp in Canton after failed negotiations with management and a federal mediator. The old contract expired Sunday, triggering the walkout.

Collie Leroy Wilkins of Fairfield is the first to go on trial. he is among three Ku Klux Klan members indicted for murder in Liuzzo's slaying near the Montgomery Selma area after the civil rights march ended.
