Unofficial returns show Ohio Republicans naming Carmin Thompson for governor and Simeon Fess for U.S. senator, with Chatfield for lieutenant governor. Donahey tops Democratic governor field. Pomerene seeks Senate, Donahey leads in early precinct tallies while Congress nominees spread across districts.
Sumner Greene told police court he drank canned heat sold for lighting stoves and felt intoxicated. Judges heard chemists say the drink contains wood alcohol, a deadly poison, but Greene survived and paid a $10 fine.
Early returns from 4750 precincts place Thompson at 102 876 while Knight trails at 43 583 and Harvey C Smith 26 981. Donahey leads Democratic rivals with 68 989 while Fess gains as late precincts report.
Deputy Sheriff Edward E. Terry of Van Wert was fatally wounded by Clarence E. Bowers, 21, as Terry was taking him to the county jail. Bowers, bound over to the grand jury on forged checks, fired five shots and escaped before being recaptured. Terry remains near death in Lima, Ohio.
A reported election plot to thwart a Lincoln district road bond led to state troops at Webb, W V, after a tale of Walter Copley’s shooting spread. The shooting claim proved false, but a posse formed seeking vengeance. Authorities investigated possible bond-election sabotage in Wayne and Mingo counties.
London August 9 Lord Northcliffe the noted British publisher remains critically ill with heart disease and his death is feared as he remains very low today.
Shanghai reports damage of 30 million dollars and about 20 000 deaths from a major typhoon that struck Swatow and endured several days of heavy rain. Hong Kong appeals for Red Cross relief. The Ursuline convent, run by Montreal sisters, was wrecked but the nuns survived by clinging to beams.
With 67 of 78 precincts reporting in Athens county, Carmi A. Thompson leads for governor against Harvey Smith while Fred Cornwell dominates the county auditor race. Other Republican contests show tight races for sheriff clerk of courts and commissioner, with Elizabeth McGrath leading county recorder and J R Sands ahead for surveyor. Foster leads in the 10th district race for national representative as Democratic results are delayed.
A large rally and basket dinner will be held at Mt. Hermon three miles west of Bartlett on the Athens Marietta road to promote building rent No 147 of the state highway system. Speakers include state highway commissioner Leon Herrick C H Bryson of Athens and Harvey Smith of Marietta. Hundreds from Athens and Washington counties are expected.
Indications point to a collapse of the inter allied conference on indemnity within six hours despite Belgian and Italian efforts to salvage it. Prime Minister Lloyd George has summoned the cabinet for a meeting tomorrow morning.
Washington August 9 Mrs Nicholine Jacobson Nelson wife of Minnesota Senator Nelson died here in her seventy fifth year She was born in Norway and the couple were married at Deerfield Wisconsin in 1868 before moving to Minnesota several years later.
Two children, Lucile Gebour age 7 and Mildred Joseph age 8, were killed when a twenty foot sand embankment at a Pike Street excavation collapsed burying them alive. Local authorities investigated the accident and identified the victims. The incident occurred on August 9 in Youngstown Ohio.
In Cleveland Indiana and Western Pennsylvania operators refuse to join a 3 p m joint scale conference called by President John L Lewis. Leaders anticipate a new wage agreement within days and coal production to resume early next week. The plan includes restoring the 1920 scale, the union dues checkoff, and waiving a five day week. Rumors of a federal injunction lack reliable sources.
Kansas City August 9 W L A Johnson general commissioner of the Southwestern Coal Operators association said John L Lewis is too optimistic about ending the coal strike. He called Lewis prediction a rump convention of a handful of operators and doubted a near settlement.
The last reserves of anthracite coal are being moved from Pottsville to New York and other points. The reserves were held by the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron company, telegraphed to Washington today by Major J O Berstien in response to government inquiries about the available supply.
Captain Amundsen and his crew have temporarily abandoned their drift over the North Pole. Dispatches from Point Barrow Alaska indicate the explorer intends to return to Seattle and likely visit New York.

Washington Aug 9 President Harding plans a personal message to Congress next week as industrywide rail and oil strikes threaten the nation. He seeks authority to seize railroads and coal mines and to amend Esch Cummins law to empower the railway labor board amid cabinet disagreement.
Fr. John Byrne of Nelsonville will become pastor of the Athens Catholic church on September 1 replacing Rev. Fr. Berry who departs to join a renowned eastern Catholic school. Byrne has headed Nelsonville for four years and previously served in Zaleski McConnelsville and other southern Ohio charges. Berry moves to Mt. St. Mary’s in Emmetsburg Maryland to teach moral theology and languages.
