British fourth army and French first army push into the Montdidier pocket, taking high numbers of prisoners and guns. Rail lines at Paris Amiens and Paris Compiegne Amiens are disrupted as Rosieres and Caix near the advancing front.
Paris dispatches report a continuing Franco British advance with Bouchoir near Rosieres reached and progress toward Nesle. Troops passed through Rosieres en Santerre toward Li Hons and threaten Chaulines while Foucourt region may threaten Peronne from the south. Heavy German losses cited with the 27th 108th and 43rd divisions hard hit and the 117th nearly decimated after arriving the night before the attack.
The report from Aug 9 notes British cavalry nearing Chaulines in France with over 20,000 prisoners taken to date. Additional villages were captured from the Germans as losses to Von Der Marwitz and Von Hutter’s forces mount. Yields per acre are 15.3 for winter wheat, 14.3 for spring wheat, 14.9 all wheat, 26.3 corn, 32.1 oats, 25.5 barley, and 14.1 rye.
Camp Sherman, Aug 9 Captain Co N Becker of the British Foreign Mission was killed in an automobile accident near the artillery range after midnight. An American officer was badly hurt and Jack McCoy, driver, was uninjured. The car overturned in a ditch during a sharp turn. Becker had served as artillery inspector for two months in Sherman.
Washington reports six lists of American casualties from the western front totaling 6529 with 468 army and 52 Marines missing or killed. Notable Ohio names include Sergeant T. Z. Eavnik of Youngstown and J. W. Scott of Cleveland among the dead, and several others from Columbus Newark and Canton among the missing or wounded.
United States conscientious objectors move to Canada seeking better prospects. They bought a large land tract thirty miles west of Winnipeg for 400000 dollars and expect to settle about 1500 people there.
Men enlisted since August 1 assembled at recruiting headquarters in the government building this morning and boarded the 1 30 train to Columbus barracks. The group includes Wayne M. The body of Orloff Roberts who died at his home in Oklahoma arrived in Athens last evening. Funeral services were held today at the Christian Church in Chauncey and burial took place in Nye Cemetery.
Athens delegates and Irma B. Voigt join state YWCA YMCA conference in Columbus to launch a national educational campaign. The drive aims to raise 112 million dollars by October with county organizations forming to deploy rapid fire speeches and recruit volunteers led by Mrs. W. W. Milar and Miss Beth Hyatt.
