Secretary Morgenthau disclosed that the United States is considering taking World War debt payments out of frozen French funds in the U S. He said the subject was raised at his press conference and that similar action against other sources of war debts may be possible.
Staff special registration targets idle and part time workers in Athens and Hocking Counties who may qualify for re employment in trades with national defense shortages. Sixteen meetings will run next week at schools and city halls with officials from the Bureau of Unemployment Compensation and United Mine Workers guiding preliminary assemblies.
Washington AP Senate moves toward approval of a militia mobilization bill authorizing the president to call the National Guard and the Officers Reserve Corps into service for a year. Debate centers on conscription versus voluntary enlistment with a Danaher amendment on quitting uniforms defeated 47 to 36.
The Ohio Chamber of Commerce urged Congress to back the Burke Wadsworth compulsory military training bill calling the volunteer army system cruel unjust and undemocratic. Mrs. Jeanette Fuller Sands 70 wife of J. R. Sands died Wednesday at the family residence 87 Sunnyside Dr after several months illness. Funeral Friday at 2 pm at the home with Rev. Gilbert Courtney. interment West Union Street Cemetery. Survived by husband, one son Willis F. Sands, four grandsons. born Millfield daughter of R. E. Fuller and Henrietta Chadwell Fuller.Former teacher in Athens schools, member DAR OES and Christian Church. Friends may call after seven tonight and until funeral time.
The Duke and Duchess of Windsor arrive in Bermuda today for an unofficial visit that mildly disrupts island life. The Duke is en route to assume governor and commander in chief of the Bahamas, with no formal pageantry planned.
The State Utilities Commission will hear on Aug 12 the Columbus and Southern Ohio Electric Co. request to issue 29 million dollars of new first mortgage bonds. Proceeds would retire existing bonds, reimburse treasury for redeemed bonds, and fund plant improvements.
Berlin says German planes laid mines at entrances to several English harbors last night and struck ammunition works and anti aircraft and searchlight positions. British raids over north and western Germany were said to have caused little damage. Fires in Essen suburb and Datteln were extinguished quickly.
In Liberty Kentucky about a fifth of the town's population has joined the army. Sixty six youths enrolled this week, pushing total enlistments to over 100 in the past month. The town's population is just over five hundred.
A cow trampled George Beerbower, age 87, in Defiance, leaving him with a punctured lung. He died today from the injuries sustained in the incident.

He cited debts inherited from the previous administration and spoke alongside Cleveland Mayor Harold H. Burton, the GOP candidate for U S senator. Earlier at Chippewa Lake he urged patriotism and the nation’s defense readiness, stressing spiritual defense and education in democracy and defense industry trades.
President Roosevelt accepted with real regret the resignation of James A. Farley as postmaster general effective August 31. Farley will step down as national chairman of the Democratic Party about two weeks earlier.

Elisha Pat Rizer age 50 of near Syracuse died in Holzer Hospital Gallipolis from injuries in a fall at the Pomeroy Salt Corp plant where he worked. Survived by his wife four sons and two brothers Richard Syracuse and Dan Pomeroy. Funeral arrangements not yet completed.

Earnest Evans and Thomas Parker saved Clarence and Joe Lightfoot after a barn at Laurel Cliff was struck by lightning. The boys, who sought shelter, were unconscious when pulled from the blaze that destroyed the barn and its contents, livestock, and farm home.
Shanghai dispatches report reliable foreign sources saying Japan is speeding preparations for further moves south toward French Indo China and the Dutch East Indies. Observers predict a lightning thrust timed to coincide with Hitler’s expected invasion of England. Mrs. May D. Wyand, 52, sued Rose Mueller publicity secretary of the Northeastern Ohio Townsend Clubs for 250000 dollars in alienation of affections. Wyand also filed for divorce from her husband Albert, 53, on the same day.
In Columbus marble benches stand in City Hall marking America's first memorial to Gold Star mothers. Presented by the Memorial Craftsmen of America, the benches were dedicated yesterday with 35 women who lost sons in World War II attending.
