In Washington disordered House farm forces push to ram a compromise farm bill through the House under an take-it-or-leave-it two thirds vote. If it fails, a later, more liberal vote is possible but unlikely.
Premier Sami Solh’s Cabinet has handed its resignation to President Camille Chamoun who will not accept it until a successor cabinet is ready. Politicians argue over a caretaker government to run Lebanon until Sept 24 when President-elect Fuad Shehab takes office. Adel Osseiran, seen as a key mediator, is favored by factions as interim premier.
A California family of three survived seven days in the Yukon after a small plane crash in the southern mountains. They lived on grouse fish and leaves until rescuers found them.

The Ohio Secretary of State and county boards started validating nearly 464000 petition signatures for a proposed constitutional amendment to ban union shops. Of these, 354210 must come from eligible voters and at least 5 percent in each of 44 counties. The petitions arrived in armored Brinks trucks. Theodore M Gray Sr said costs totaled at least a quarter million dollars and signatures were gathered across all 88 counties.
Homer Jack Dean, convicted in 1950 for a 1947 murder of Elma C. Rice, a Clintonville real estate salesman, had his bid for a new trial rejected by the 2nd and 10th District Appellate Courts. The judges said his remaining option is a gubernatorial pardon.
Opponents of foreign aid concede most Senate leaders will restore funds cut by the House. The Senate Appropriations Committee backed 3.518 billion dollars in foreign aid, restoring about 440 million of the 597 million chopped.
In New London Connecticut a group of Boy Scouts and mothers defend Scoutmaster William N Smith who was banned by the Boy Scout organization for allegedly leading trips without authorization. Lee Brown a blind 11 year old praises Smith for taking him into Troop 27 and arranging braille scout books from his own pocket. The trips cited include a four day 200 mile canoe journey on the Connecticut River and a Mt Washington excursion in subzero weather.
In Pontiac Michigan Frank Kierdorf hospitalized burned and claiming an attack. Police seek his uncle Herman Kierdorf amid calls of vengeance. Prosecutor Ziem questions prior medication and tempo of events based on pathologist findings.
In Cleveland a robber and Mrs. Winifred Stein fought over a canvas bag containing $6,120 in Metropolitan Life Insurance receipts on an east sidewalk. The thief won but dropped $500 in cash and $7,000 in checks before fleeing in a car driven by a partner.
Washington report says the Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill adding one federal judgeship each in northern and southern Ohio. The House lists two judges for northern Ohio, creating a discrepancy between chambers.
Court appointed monitors urged sweeping reforms in Teamsters Union operations as Hoffa and aides faced uncertain hopes for a February election. A compromise settlement requires the monitors to oversee the union for at least a year until a new convention votes on officers.
Pittsburgh reports Bethlehem Steel Corp and Crucible Steel Co raising prices on selected products in the third phase of a pattern begun last week. The move signals continued price adjustments across the steel sector with both firms matching the escalation.

Secretary of State Dulles warned in Rio de Janeiro that indirect aggression could trigger another world war with disastrous consequences. Sheriff Robert Conway said Georgia authorities captured Robert Kubat aged 23 and Harry Clark Jr aged 22 near Caldwell. The men were seized in Brunswick, riding in the stolen car used in their Ohio jail escape.
Gia Scala, the Irish Italian film actress, was pulled back from the parapet of London's Waterloo Bridge by a cab driver who feared she would jump into the Thames. The director called the incident a mistake, saying she was acting defiantly.
