An ammonia tank exploded at the C. F. Jackson Co department store in Norwalk Ohio injuring several and killing three people including Leo Schlachter and two others. The blast damaged the basement area and disrupted Interurban traffic as debris and ammonia fumes spread onto nearby streets.
Scoutmaster Dupler leads a troop from Athens four miles to a Harmony area camp for a weeklong outing. About 100 Scouts are expected to participate with many attending after summer school. Organizers hope to establish a permanent camp at Harmony with civic group support.
The late Palmer Wood's funeral was held Sunday at 4:90 PM at West Union Street Cemetery. Rev. W. Y. Wilcox of First Presbyterian conducted the service. Mrs. Robert F. Tompkins sang "Aside with Me." Odd Fellows members attended in a body. Relatives from Athens, Cleveland, Nelsonville, Wheeling WV, and St. Louis joined the burial procession.
Two Parkersburg men Harold Dow and Roland Hohensack were arrested for drunkenness after arriving on a B and O excursion to Cincinnati. Athens officials detained them at the city jail and they pled guilty with a five dollar fine and costs. A third man Thomas Kelly from Athens was arrested for drunkenness at the depot and fined nineteen dollars and costs after pleading guilty.
Topeka August 6 Governor J M Davis is seriously ill with influenza, doctors say. He had complained of not feeling well all week and only gave up Saturday afternoon. A physician was summoned and diagnosed influenza with a high fever around the clock on Sunday. No lung congestion noted. Only family, nurses and doctors may see him.
A happy surprise party honored Mrs. Nancy Tom on her 68th birthday. The event was hosted at the country home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert West near Townhouse Chapel in Albany.
Dictator Frank Monahan of San Francisco California is named the new supreme dictator of the Loyal Order of Moose. The announcement identifies Monahan as leader amid organizational leadership changes.

Driver Bright Shumaker of Marion and another unnamed male occupant sustained injuries but survived.
Cross examination of John L. Whitfield, charged with killing Patrolman Dennis Griffin on May 11, continued as the court reopened. Prosecutors plan relentless questioning over discrepancies between signed statements and Whitfield's direct testimony. Whitfield reportedly nervous in his cell after Saturday's developments. state may rest after his exam with closing arguments to follow, possibly reaching the jury tomorrow afternoon.
