Ohio colleges face thousands of empty seats and beds
Ohio universities expect about 1 000 empty classroom seats and 2 500 dorm beds with independent colleges able to house up to 10 000 more students in September. Enrollment declines relate to job opportunities for graduates and shifting patterns, with Ohio State University reporting full classrooms but fewer sophomores and freshmen.

Admissions director Jerry Reese projects 3800 freshmen this fall at Ohio University Athens, down from about 4000 last year due to selective service changes rising college costs and a softer job market. Housing capacity should reach to full by fall with upperclass housing contracts up slightly. Overall enrollment on the Athens campus will approximate last year’s total of 18764, officials said.
