Gov. Connally convenes a meeting with Texas law officials to prevent a repeat of the Charles Whitman massacre that killed 16 and wounded 31. Bodies of Whitman and his mother to be sent to Lake Worth, Florida for burial. A tumor may have caused his outburst. autopsy notes his self centered nature. Gun control measures in Congress face uncertain fate amid Johnson pressure. Dodd seeks full committee action, Dirksen urges compromise.
U S helicopter reinforcements move into South Viet Nam near the Cambo dia frontier as B 52 bombers strike suspected North Vietnamese positions. The 1st Cavalry Airmobile Division grows the force to 10 000 plus, while renewed U S air raids target Haiphong and areas near Hanoi. Lieutenant General Nguyen Chanh Thi says in Lynchburg he will run for premier in upcoming elections.
Former Governor G. Mennen Williams, boosting Johnson Viet Nam policy support, defeats Detroit mayor Jerome Cavanaugh for Michigan Democratic U S Senate nomination. Idaho State Sen. Don Samuelson upsets Gov. Robert Smylie in Republican gubernatorial race. Kansas Republicans renominate Sen. James Pearson and Gov. William Avery. Williams campaigned across 83 counties. Cavanaugh urged nonmilitary Viet Nam efforts. Samuelson led in 44 counties, backed by conservative party factions. Main issue centered on Smylie’s 12-year tenure and a 3 percent sales tax.
Democratic candidate Fra zier Reams Jr told crowds in Logan and towns along the 10th District that Gov. Rhodes is out of touch and squandered funds on entertainers. Pete O Grady praised turnout and said Ohio Democrats will win. The caravan drew small to mid sized crowds and largely party workers.
A car and bicycle collision on West Virginia Route 17 eight miles north of Winfield kills William Lyle Johnson and his son Arleigh, plus Johnsons nephew Ronald Miller in the crash. Five-year-old Mark Johnson is in critical condition at Thomas Memorial Hospital with the others treated and released. The driver’s wife Sherry and three other children were unharmed. The cyclist Wendall Wilcox, 17, suffers a fractured leg. The Johnsons lived at 1685 Lincoln Heights in Pomeroy. Mr Johnson worked at the Kaiser Aluminum plant in Ravenswood. A Kaiser employee, the Johnsons had been visiting Mr Johnson’s parents nearby.
