Dispatch from the American front reports rapid Allied progress along the Soissons to Rheims salient. Cohan and nearby towns are in American hands as German forces fall back amid heavy artillery. Some prisoners are very young, and German officers are being captured with their gear.
Allied forces push through the Soissons region as French and American troops drive the Germans from key hills around Montagne de Paris and Ples sier and Martennes Wood. The retreating enemy skims north with artillery and air power aiding the advance.
The Allied forces drive toward the Vesle and Aisne rivers as German lines fall back from the Vesse river. French and American units advance on Soissons and Rheims fronts with Pershing confirming American progress and pockets of enemy retreat.
Eight American divisions are engaged in the western offensive led by General March. The 32nd, 28th, and Rainbow Division are noted for rapid advances, with Pershing commanding over 1.1 million men in his area. The report confirms vast manpower and ongoing battles near the front.
London reports French forces held Soissons and pushed along the south bank of the Aisne beyond Dommiers and Venizes. Allied troops moved on the plateau north of Venixelle- Braisne with further east advances, and Dormans Wood has been occupied.
London reports rapid retreat as French forces advance across the Vesle with bridges destroyed. Villages north of the river are burned, fourteen large fires seen. Germans pull back beyond Soissons toward the Aisne, likely taking a line along the Chemin des Dames Ridge. French regain ground near St Hilaire.
London August 3 battle front dispatch says German troops are retiring to the east bank of the Ancre between Aveluy Wood and Albert. The retreat spans about three miles along the front. Germans have previously held the area and are now repositioning eastward.
Paris dispatch reports rapid Allied advance from west of Soissons to Rheims with American units near the Aisne and D'Orillon valley within six miles of Fismes. West of Rheims, Vesle crossings observed. Soissons attacked, Germans retreating north along Launoy route as cavalry and tanks press the flanks.
Camp Sherman Chillicothe August 3 The weeding out of men unfit for overseas service continues. The rigid process leads many to believe the Lincoln Division will depart within two weeks. Men removed from the 84th due to disabilities are being placed in development battalions.
Washington reports 206 total casualties with 112 killed in action and 11 dying of wounds. Eleven died of disease and five from accidents or other causes. Fifty six wounded severely and two with undetermined wounds, nine missing. Killed in action include G B Vick Roy of Lancaster Ohio C Babcock of Hamilton Ohio William Myers of Dartmore W Va T P Stone of Lockland Ohio J Uxa of Cleveland Ohio.
Eleven Marine Corps casualties were reported with four killed in action five severely wounded and two slightly wounded. KIA include Corporal F. C. Williams of Charleston West Virginia and Private W. S. Austin of Cincinnati Ohio.
A flag ceremony will mark the service flag at the Luhrig Mine west of Athens Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Prof. T N Hoover will deliver the address and the public is invited to attend.
Shirley BE. W. Shirley has been elected principal of Crooksville schools in Perry county at a good salary. He previously led Amesville high school for four years and last year ran the Wilkesville high school.
James Dowling a British private soldier aged 68 has won 13 war medals to date. He has served with distinction and earned multiple commendations for his service.
Marietta reports Henry Lewis Austin known as Doc Austin of Cutler was captured in Athens by Athens county authorities on a concealed weapon indictment returned a year ago. He was to be held for transfer to this county to face the charge. Austin and his son traveled to Athens where the son was captured at Camp Sherman by Sheriff Lowry.
Washington Aug 3 In week ending July 20 the railroad administration said 32 903 more coal cars were loaded at mines than the same period last year totaling 270 434 cars up from 237 531 Most gains were in bituminous with 225 771 cars Anthracite reached 40 664 cars and lignite 3 999 cars The year to July 20 increase over last year was 328 959 cars.
Paris August 3 Herbert Hoover the American food director and his party had a close shave when a bomb shattered the windows of their private car during a German air raid on Boulogne.
Columbus police report ongoing thefts as five cars are identified among a batch stolen by a gang. A Mr. Birtcher of Columbus drove away a Buick Six today after matching parts and tire numbers despite altered frame and motor numbers. An Oldsmobile also was recovered by its owner, with officers predicting several more of the lot.
Sanford Snyder becomes coal inspector for the federal fuel program after resigning as president of the United Mine Workers valley district. He will inspect mines in the rocking district, live in Athens, and seek cooperation of miners for loading the best possible fuel for Uncle Sam. Will Robinett becomes district president, Robert Seein as vice president, and Spyder remains as head to aid the transition.
Mohican Class members are reminded to meet this evening for the evening party. Regular sessions will continue in August with no church service.
A U S soldier helps a frail French widow by cutting her hay with a scythe. A doughboy from the Midwest, enjoying a brief leave, clumsily communicates then proves his aid by taking over the task. The widow greets him with gratitude as guns rumble in the distance.
London announces Lance Corporal Joseph Dowling of the Connaught Rangers was found guilty of treason related offense and sentenced to death but the sentence was commuted to life penal servitude. The case involves a German submarine landing and subsequent military tribunal proceedings.
