Republican gains urged to seize the House in 1876

New York Law Requires Gold Payments After 1879

A 1879 New York law signed by Samuel J. Tilden mandates all state taxes after January 1 1879 be collected in gold or gold redeemable notes and any contract payable in dollars shall be settled in United States coin. Merchants infer debts in New York must be paid in gold, a move aimed at Ohio Greenbackers.

Kilpatrick Denounces Democracy at Middletown Meeting

Gen Kilpatrick spoke to a large Hayes and Wheeler gathering in Middletown New York on Tuesday night July 25. He attacked the Democracy for deserting Mr Greeley in 1872 and misleading the public since, fully endorsing the Republican candidates and platform.
