The House weighs broader authorities for President Truman to control the economy during war. Support grows for including wage price and rationing powers beyond the administration’s request. Banking Committee advised limited powers but factions press for standby wage and price control with Senate review possible later.
Senator Bridges proposes using a 100 million loan to Spain to secure US access to Spanish bases if war breaks out in Europe. The loan was added to the appropriation bill by a 65 to 15 Senate vote with leaders arguing Spain’s strategic and anti Communist role. Opponents called it a bribe to Franco. House approval awaited.
Washington says the Senate moves toward a bipartisan push to cut nondefense items in the $34.688 billion 1951 appropriations bill. A Douglas amendment to slash federal construction and related costs by about $1 billion failed as Bridges and Byrd push a 10 percent across the board cut with support from over 60 senators, aiming to save roughly $800 million.

A reader in Athens by Kenner Bush sold a used Whizzer motorcycle advertised in Messenger Want Ad. The ad offered a genuine Whizzer bike in good condition with extras and a windshield. Bush received six to seven calls and could have sold more.
Washington reports Defense Department will announce within 24 hours rules for deferment from military service for men in critical civilian jobs and industries. Commerce will list essential industries while Labor issues a short list of critical occupations. Lists not guarantees of exemption but aim to keep workers with needed skills.
Governor Frank J. Lausche told centennial crowds in Vinton County that those who love a foreign country more than America have no place in the United States. He spoke amid rain under an umbrella after touring the grounds and attending the Hills of Vinton pageant.
Union representatives and the Newark Stove Co resumed contract negotiations as 500 workers observed a union-declared holiday. Unions seek 20 cents an hour raise and broader vacation qualification rules along with unspecified paid vacation enhancements.

In the Mason County clerk race at the Tuesday primary, John E. Brown led incumbent John G. Aten 1279 to 1019 with 30 of 38 precincts counted.
Columbus AP reports Ohio lists 2860 men to be drafted in October, up from 2850 in September. Col. C W Goble says county quotas will be announced later and about 11 000 pre induction physicals were held for September with similar numbers expected for October.
In Spokane base officials say more B 29 bombers will leave for Far East duties with no count or timetable given. Hoover urges Republican criticism during Korea war. Camp Breckenridge Ky to become replacement training center by Sept. 1. Tokyo reports B 24 raids destroy 20 percent of Hung Nam factory area. Commerce plans tighter export controls on arms materials. Bolton says civilian defense program nearly ready with women roles. About 200000 tons of U S weapons and supplies delivered to allies in five months.
Belgians returned to work after a week of strikes over King Leopold III's abdication. The Liege area remained partly crippled as workers held a one day mourning strike for three workers killed by police during rioting. Leopold remained official king.
Republican Senators Robert A. Taft and John W. Bricker of Ohio voted for a $100,000,000 loan to Spain as an amendment to the appropriations bill. The amendment passed 65 to 13.
U S 24th Division troops recaptured hill positions northeast of Chinju and held on in a flaming battle about 40 miles from Pusan. Fighting raged with North Korean Sixth Division east of Chinju as Reds moved toward Kumchon and Yongdok, while Marines near the coast supplied support and American planes set fires on Kumchon.
Reports describe heavy fighting around Yongdok and Chinju. U S Marines arrive in port with M 26 tanks and 99 mm guns as Maj. Gen. Church says American forces hold. MacArthur calls it the war’s most critical battle and Reds may unleash remaining tanks.
Navy and Air Force bombed Mokpo and Yasu critical supply bases used by Communist forces behind the southeast push. U S destroyers aided South Korean craft at Yasu while naval units hit warehouses. The day featured 500 air sorties targeting North Korean chemical plants and armored positions as MacArthur warned of the enemy’s waning time.
The Army identified four National Guard divisions and two regimental combat teams to be activated. The 28th from Pennsylvania and the 40th from California will train at Camp Atterbury and Camp Cook respectively. The 43rd from Connecticut Vermont and Rhode Island will train at Camp Pickett, and the 45th from Oklahoma at Camp Polk. The 196th from South Dakota heads to Camp Carson and the 278th from Tennessee to Fort Devens.
Col. Charles Joseph Hubbard 48 renowned Arctic explorer and ex Harvard gridiron star died in a plane crash 500 miles from the North Pole. Eight other Canadians perished in the same accident.
Senator George of Georgia forecast rapid approval of President Truman's 5 billion dollar tax increase to fund more military equipment. He heads the Senate Finance Committee and expects higher rates on corporations and individuals could yield 6 to 8 billion next year. Some oppose immediate 1950 timing for corporate income.
Gov. Frank Lausche said federal and local law enforcement could handle subversive Communist activity in Ohio after Atty. Gen. Herbert Duffy sought authority for a state wide search. Duffy asked to appoint a special grand jury and prosecute indictments, but needed the governor's consent and funding.
Attorney General Herbert S. Duffy told the state emergency board it can appropriate money from the state emergency fund to pay World War II veterans who served 90 days or less. The last legislature authorized the bonuses but did not allocate funds.
