Savings distribution doubts postwar spending boom
Government studies show 60 percent of saved funds are held by the top 10 percent of families, with 24 percent of households having no savings. Most savers plan to use funds for emergencies only, not for current purchases, challenging expectations of a vast postwar boom. Demand will rely on current income or borrowing rather than accumulated savings.

Crosser bill on railroad retirement and unemployment benefits
The Crosser bill would raise the retirement payroll levy to 12.5 percent, extend coverage and increase survivors' annuities, while extending unemployment benefits and adding illness or accident coverage. Railroads oppose the bill as passed, arguing a $100,000,000 higher cost than the committee’s recommendation. The issue awaits Senate action.
