Chicago officials and civic leaders rushed food and relief to the black belt after four days of arson and mob violence. Twenty-one fatalities were reported among blacks and whites, with 33 dead overall as soldiers patrolled streets and guards faced the edge of white districts.
Washington and Columbus report wage demands from 690000 rail workers across conductors brakemen firemen and shopmen seeking raises averaging 35 to 45 percent to offset an 85 percent cost of living jump. A burglary and attempted safe robbery occurred Wednesday night at Maggied Brothers on Central Avenue. Don and Mrs Hooper heard a possible shot and saw men fleeing. The safe door was blown open but contents remained. Police found a burned fuse and a broken jimmy. nitroglycerine may have been used.
