Port Robbed While Asleep in Sleep of Conscience Tree
Last Sunday at about three o'clock Port, an ex policeman, woke to find his trousers missing from under his pillow containing $225 in cash and a $40 gold watch. A scuffle ensued as the thief fled from the second story window, leaving coat and shoes behind. Port fired but failed to hit. Sheriff Riley and Marshal Dean elicited a pursuit, leading to John Herman of East St. Louis being arrested in Corning, Ohio. Herman confessed burglaries in multiple homes, pleaded guilty, and was recommitted to await grand jury.
