Firing in corn blamed on nitrogen shortage says expert
E. B. Barnes of the Ohio Experiment Station explains that mid summer firing results from insufficient nitrogen. Applying 200 pounds per acre of sulfate of ammonia before plowing can prevent firing and boost yields by about 10 to 20 bushels per acre. If cyanimid is used it can be spread with a grass seeder. If manured, fertilizer may be spread on top of each load according to Mr. Barnes.
