Mrs J Bert Greenlee of Sycamore Street was declared insane and sent to Athens State Hospital a few days ago. She is reported to be eating along nicely there. Her mother cares for her two month old baby in Leon West Virginia.
Meigs County infirmary and Children's Home inspected by C H Huitzen of Columbus and Paul Juise of Logan amid a Messenger tour. Findings show 95 by 22 foot main infirmary with open grates and coal range heating, no fire protection, 42 inmates at the home and 8 at the infirmary, plus risks in sleep quarters and hallways. County commissioners to consider action at next meeting.
A. F. Eiselstein, longtime Meigs County highway superintendent, is ordered suspended effective May 3 after a Columbus letter from the State Highway Department. Civil service trials may follow after a 10 day response, with charges including misuse of state equipment, irregular payroll, sale of state property, and conduct unbecoming a public official. Robert Bischoff, district director, to oversee state property during proceedings.
The county auditor’s office sees many residents rush to file personal tax returns to avoid taxes on the $100 exemption before May 1. Three clerks handle filings as the deadline nears and the rush likely continues until closing time tomorrow evening.
C E Miller of Pomeroy with daughter Miss Anna and Herman Fisher left Monday in Mr Miller's car for Butte Montana. Miss Anna has visited her grandmother Mrs Mary Miller the past month. Mr Miller works in cattle raising at Butte. Fisher, a Pomeroy barber, will try ranch life for a few years. Also visiting are Mr and Mrs George Russell of Crooksville, sister Mrs Lewis Moore and other relatives.
Pomeroy April 30 County Dog Warden Henry Seidenable reports people from other counties bring dogs into the area, then release them. He notes one dog was brought from Athens County yesterday and freed at Darwin.
Pomeroy reports Judge F W Crow granted three divorces after hearings held 30 days earlier. Names include Sarah M Renshaw versus Joseph A Renshaw Velma J Ely versus William W Ely and Dora B Bostic versus Alvin O Bostic.
Fred L. Davis known as Curly Davis in Middleport is named among new guards at the Ohio Penitentiary. Davis was a recent candidate for marshal of Middleport.
Mr and Mrs Maynard Davis and their children returned Monday to their Bucyrus home after a weekend in Pomeroy with Mrs Davis sister Mrs Wright McCroba and relatives there.
Arrangements are set for World War hero Alvin C. York to appear at Pythian Park in Middleport on Decoration Day. York will share his life story in the principal event of Meigs County War Trophy Memorial Committee's Pomeroy Bend program.
State Highway Department plans costly upgrade for Route 7 starting at the Nos 31 junction near Pomeroy. The project removes a curve and builds two large culverts through a deep gully toward Kerrs reaching Koehler station, with paving hoped as far as Ironton within a year.
Cornelius Roush, 80, caretaker of Gravel Hill Cemetery in Cheshire, was killed Monday morning when his horse ran away. He was found beneath a overturned wagon during a midday search, breaking his neck. Survived by his aged wife. his only son died in an accident five years ago.
Middleport notes the Whatsoever Class meets Monday evening in the Presbyterian Church assembly room for its monthly meeting with a rendered program. Social chairman Mrs J M Buchanan and assistants Mrs I E Harrah Mrs J G Talbott Mrs Emma Owens and Mrs H E Thomas organize the event. One more spring session gathering will close until September 5.
Mrs. Jo seph Runion, 68, died Monday afternoon at her South Beach Street home after months of ill health. Survived by her husband, a Messenger distributor, and six children from a former marriage: daughters Mrs Ephriam Dalgry mple and Mrs Ed Allen. sons Frank, Albert, Will, and Clark. Four children live in Middleport, one in Long Bottom. Funeral Thursday at 2 p.m. from the residence.
Middleport residents Mr and Mrs D J Sullivan who wintered in Miami Florida report they expect to arrive home on May first.
The Delphian Society met at Mrs. Edward French on South Second and Garfield Streets to study German composers. The class began five years ago with 40 members, but attendance declined. two more meetings remain with 12 members to complete the course.
