Congress braces for a hard vote on the 1966 Civil Rights Act including a controversial fair housing measure and new federal power to combat racial terrorism. Senate leaders pledge opposition, arguing the bill forces integration. supporters call housing protections key to the bill’s aim.
In Saigon the United States landed over 4000 fresh combat troops raising total U S forces near 250 000 as the 25th Tropic Lightning Division from Hawaii debarked at Vung Tau. Ground operations in the jungle failed to draw Viet Cong into engagement while air power operated over North and South Vietnam.
Welfare recipients from across Ohio plan a march to Columbus on June 20 to demand higher payments. Lathan Johnson of Cincinnati led the Ad Hoc Committee for Adequate Welfare, saying the protest aims to force policy changes. The march could take up to ten days from distant cities.
