Washington reports a government padlock will be forged on prices from May 18 to cap virtually every item on daily shopping lists and rents in war boom towns will be limited for the duration of the war.
Price Administrator Leon Henderson announces a universal price ceiling set to March levels starting May 18, covering most consumer goods and rents. Retail costs are expected to drop about 3 percent from current levels, with exemptions for certain foods, services, and cultural items.
The War Department reported that harbor batteries in Manila Bay sank an armed Japanese vessel and disrupted troop concentrations on Cavite and Bataan shores.
