Athens High School encourages student visitation to other high schools. A carload of students travels every five to six weeks, then reports back over the loudspeaker. Parental permission is required, and trips aren’t funded by the district.
Athens Jaycees board meeting at Baker Center completed plans for the annual awards banquet on May 20. Seven committees were named for honors including Easter Seal telethon and blood clinic while new officers will be installed at the next membership meeting. May Fair plans and drug abuse awareness tickets for teens were also approved.

A heavy vehicle knocked out a bridge on County Road 76 at the Elm Golf Course Thursday night. County Engineer Gerald Hann said the structure is destroyed and will be closed indefinitely. The truck crossed it, but was not found near the damaged span. The bridge had a reduced load limit and repairs depend on material availability. earlier this week another heavy truck damaged a different Ames bridge.
Chen's Restaurant on W Union Street will close tonight after a facelift to become My Sister's Closet offering junior women’s apparel. Mullins Enterprises Inc plans a Gallipolis style store in Athens by Aug 15 to Sept 1 with Victor Mullins running operations. The Athens remodel, owned by the Masonic Temple, aims for a late summer reopening.
The change starts overnight as clocks move forward one hour. Set clocks ahead one hour before sleep Saturday or at 2 a.m. Sunday when the time officially changes to 3 a.m. You will regain the hour in the fall when standard time returns.
An Albany Route 2 woman Edith Throckmorton, 76, was cited for failure to yield after stopping at a stop sign and turning left into Rex Hamilton, 25, who was eastbound on Route 50. Hamilton veered off the road, struck a metal post, and avoided collision.
