The Athens League of Women Voters hosted a sparse candidates meeting where Mayor Raymond Shepard touted continued progress on water, streets, and finances, while challenger Foster Coe pressed for a tougher street program and better downtown parking solutions. Water System Support Grows in Margaret Creek District
Officials report 385 taps purchased to fund the district’s water system. Of these, 375 serve households and 10 serve commercial users including apartments, trailer courts, farms, and schools. Albany accounts for 290 taps. rural areas along a 30 mile line make up the rest. Extensions of sign-up target Pleasanton, Hocking, and Carbondale as residents urged support for a five mile line. Carbondale and Hocking held a meeting to push the extension. 24 have signed, with 40+ needed by May 6. Eight subscribers per mile are required. Similar work is under way near Pleasanton southwest of Athens. A Farmers Home Administration loan closes June 15, after which final engineering by Evans, Medhwart, Hambleton and Tilton will begin.
